Albion vs. Carthage

The Game Story:
The Carthage College menís lacrosse team (1-0, 1-0 Midwest Lacrosse Conference) opened its 2010 season on Saturday, Feb. 13 with a 16-5 win over MLC-opponent Albion College (0-1, 0-1 MLC) at the Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac, Mich.

Carthage got off to a good start with a 6-0 opening quarter. Peter Slefinger scored an unassisted goal with 9:14 remaining in the first quarter and was followed by fellow attackman Keegan Bowman with a score at the 8:22 mark. The Red Men rounded out the quarter with four more goals, all from different players. Jesse Colten and Keegan Bowman each had two assist on each of those scores. The Britons traded goals with Carthage in the second quarter, and the Red Men led, 8-2, at halftime. Carthage put the game out of reach with a 4-0 run to open the first three minutes of the third period.

Much of the game was controlled by Ross Cobb's dominance on face-offs and Dan Hurt's play between the pipes, allowing only two goals on the afternoon. Keegan Bowman (So., New Westminster, British Columbia/New Westminster Secondary) finished the day with a school-record ten points on five goals and a school-record five assists. Ross Cobb (Fr., Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) went 16-for-22 on face-offs and collected 11 ground balls. Dustin Heinrichs (So., Wausau, Wis./East) had four takeaways, while Dan Hurst (So., Columbia, Mo./Hickman) had nine saves and three goals-against.

On Sunday, Feb. 14, the Red Men lost to Davenport University, 12-8, in an exhibition game, also in Pontiac, Mich. Carthage returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 against Hendrix College in a Conway, Ark., beginning at 11 a.m.
