| The Game Story: | The Baltimore Bayhawks (4-1) defeated the Long Island Lizards (3-1), 13-12,
in a nailbiter in front of 2,490 at Homewood Field. Mark Frye was named Bud
Light MVP, with two fourth quarter goals, including the game-winner with 23
seconds remaining. The Lizards scored two goals in the final minute to tie
the game at 12, but Frye spoiled the Lizards comeback and dealt Long Island
their first loss of the season.
The Lizards got on the board first with Kevin Lowe feeding Jay Jalbert for
the power-play goal, 53 seconds in on the Lizards first posession. Minutes
later, Mark Millon tied it up, but Long Island scored two in a row to take
a 3-1 lead. Tom Marachek beat Dougherty on a two-man power-play, but A.J.
Haugen put the Lizards up 4-2 with a goal at the end of the first quarter.
Millon scored again to start the third, and newcomer Brian Langtry followed
it with a two-point goal to give the Bayhawks a 5-4 lead. Jay Jalbert
scored on an assist from Conor Denihan, but Baltimore scored two more to go
up 7-5. Jalbert scored his fourth goal of the game on transition with 44
seconds remaining in the half, cutting the lead to 7-6 as the teams went to
the locker rooms.
Tim Goettelmann scored two straight for Long Island to start the third,
first converting a pass from Kevin Lowe to tie the game at seven, and then
scoring on a pass from Jay Jalbert to take an 8-7 lead. Gary Gait ended a
14-minute scoring drought for Baltimore to notch the game at eight with one
quarter to play.
Tom Marachek and Kip Fulks quickly gave Baltimore a 10-8 lead with a pair
of goals, but the Lizards battled back. Conor Denihan and A.J. Haugen
scored a pair to tie the game with nine minutes remaining. However, Mark
Frye scored, and Gary Gait followed it up to give Baltimore a 12-10 lead.
The Lizards wouldn't go away, as A.J. Haugen and Jay Jalbert scored back-to-
back goals with 49 and 33 seconds remaining, respectively, but Frye blasted
the game-winner 10 seconds later. Long Island had one more chance with nine
seconds left, but could not hold on to the ball.
The Baltimore win avenges the Lizards 14-12 victory in the MLL Opener
earlier this year. Jay Jalbert led the Lizards with five goals and an
assist, while Tim Goettelmann and A.J. Haugen each recorded a hat-trick.
The Lizards return home next Friday to take on the struggling Bridgeport
Barrage (0-4) at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Faceoff is slated for 7:30 PM.
