Albany, N.Y. – Albany broke open a close game with seven fourth-quarter goals and defeated Drexel, 20-14, on Saturday afternoon. The No. 18 Great Danes were knotted at 13-13 after three quarters, but Seth Oakes scored three of his game-high six goals in the final 15 minutes to give Albany its first win of the year. Oakes, who also had two assists for eight points, opened the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal less than two minutes in to give Albany a lead it would never surrender. After a Drexel penalty, Sean Eccles scored a man-up goal and a minute later John Maloney gave the Great Danes a three-goal lead at 16-13. It was Maloney's third goal of the contest. Drexel freshman Matthew Varian snapped the run with an even strength goal with 9:07 to go. It was the third goal of the day for the rookie, who also had two assists. That proved to be the Dragons' final goal of the contest. Albany scored four times in the final eight minutes as it defeated Drexel for the second straight season. The Great Danes fired 60 shots on the day, compared to just 37 for the visitors, and continued to pepper Drexel goalkeeper Jimmy Joe Granito throughout the game. The junior made 16 saves in the game in a losing cause. Will Manganiello and Joe Rainoldi scored goals late in the third period to even the score at 13 heading into the fourth. Drexel had trailed, 13-11, and had gone almost nine minutes without a goal before Manganiello's third of the game started Drexel's run of two goals. Offense was the name of the game early as both teams showed that even without Lyle Thompson and Ryan Belka, each team has plenty of firepower. The teams alternated the first four goals of the game with Adam Osika and Justin Reh scoring for the home team and Manganiello and Michael Kay scoring for Drexel. The Great Danes then took a two-goal lead in a hurry. Eli Lasda made it 3-2 at the 7:16 mark and eight seconds later Zach Ornstein won the face-off clean and beat Drexel keeper Granito. Matt Varian stopped the run with his first of the day, but again Albany won the draw and this time Connor Fields scored just seconds later. Somehow, despite losing the first nine face-offs of the game, Drexel was able to even it up in the closing minutes of the quarter. Cole Shafer made a nice move and set up Marshal Kay on the doorstep with just under four minutes to go. Late in the quarter, Rainoldi got his first of the year making it a 5-5 game. The second quarter mirrored the first, with the two team scoring nine goals. Drexel took the lead for the first time in the early going of the second as Shafer scored a pair of goals, the second on the man-up. After each team scored a goal, Albany closed the half with a 4-1 run. Oakes had two of the goals for the Great Danes, while Maloney and Jake Cullen each had man-up goals. Drexel went to intermission down by a goal at 10-9. The Great Danes won 26 of 38 face-offs in the game, and had 41 ground balls to just 26 for Drexel. Ornstein took all 38 draws for Albany. Shafer finished the day with three points for Drexel, while Rainoldi had a pair of goals. Albany had 11 players score at least one goal. Blake Riorden had 12 stops in the cage as he picked up the win. Drexel continues its three-game road swing with a game at Villanova on Tuesday.
