ANNAPOLIS, MD. Sixth-seeded Maryland led from start to finish Sunday afternoon as it defeated third-seeded North Carolina 14-7 in the NCAA Mens Lacrosse Tournament quarterfinals before a crowd of 10,235 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Maryland advances to the NCAA semifinals and the Terps will play arch-rival Johns Hopkins next Saturday in Philadelphia. Bryan Cole led the Terrapins with four goals and an assist while Connor Kelly had a hat trick with all three goals coming in the first half. Jay Carlson had a pair of goals for the Terps while Joe LoCascio had a goal and three assists for Maryland, which improved to 14-3 on the season. Carolina saw its season end at 13-4. Joey Sankey led the Tar Heels offensively with three goals and an assist while Jimmy Bitter finished with a goal and two assists. Steve Pontrello had two goals for UNC. Sankey finished his career as UNCs leading scorer with 229 points while Bitter is the third leading scorer in Tar Heel history with 208 points. Bitter and Sankey finished second and third in goal scoring in UNC history with 126 and 125 goals, respectively. Maryland outshot the Tar Heels 46-41 and won 13 face-offs to UNCs 12. Kyle Bernlohr started the game for Maryland and earned the win in goal with 12 saves and seven goals allowed in 57 minutes. UNC played two goalkeepers with Bryan Balkam coming on in the second half. He made seven saves and allowed two goals in the final 26 minutes of action. The Terrapins dominated both the first and the second quarters, outshooting the Tar Heels 20-15 and forcing seven turnovers while committing only two of their own. Bryan Cole and Connor Kelly scored a minute apart early in the opening quarter before Steve Pontrello got the Tar Heels on the board with 9:45 left in the quarter. The Terps answered with three straight goals and Joe LoCascios goal with 13:33 left in the second quarter had the Terps up 5-1. Joey Sankey scored off an assist by Jimmy Bitter 11:50 before intermission but Maryland went on a four-goal run to end the half. Connor Kelly had a pair of goals for the Terps in their run and he finished his hat trick with 14 seconds left in the first half with an extra-man goal off an assist by Joe LoCascio. Carolinas seven-goal deficit was its biggest of the season. Earlier in the year the Tar Heels tailed the Terps 7-2 in the third quarter of the regular-season meeting. That five-goal deficit was the largest the Tar Heels had faced all season. Maryland came out a stuck three goals in the opening 4:15 of the second half. Bryan Cole notched his third goal of the game and then Jay Carlson had back-to-back goals to make it 12-2 Terps and force a timeout by the Tar Heels with 8:36 left in the third quarter. Maryland continued its scoring run with an unassisted goal by Dylan Maltz to make it 13-2 Terps with 6:52 left in the third quarter. A goal on a rebound by Joey Sankey ended a 24:20 scoring drought for the Tar Heels with 2:30 left in the third quarter. Jimmy Bitter scored 58 seconds off a Sankey assist to pull the Tar Heels within 13-4. Steve Pontrello scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter, assisted by Jimmy Bitter, at 12:21. Luke Goldstock scored his 50th goal of the season with 8:45 to play on a rebound. The goal extended his goal scoring streak to 17 games in a row. Bryan Cole answered with his fourth goal of the game with 5:29 left to make it 14-6. Joey Sankey then finished off the scoring for the Tar Heels with 5:12 to play off an assist by Chad Tutton.
