PHILADELPHIA, PA - Sixth-seeded Maryland built a 10-5 third-quarter lead and held off a furious rally by Johns Hopkins to advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship game with a 12-11 victory in the semifinals Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field. The one-goal margin is nothing new for Hopkins-Maryland as this is the ninth one-goal affair between the two teams in the last 20 meetings. br br The loss snaps a seven-game Johns Hopkins winning streak. The Blue Jays were making their NCAA-record 29th appearance in the semifinals and looking for their record 19th trip to the national championship game. The Terps (15-3), who will play Denver for the national championship after the Pioneers topped Notre Dame in overtime in the other semifinal, used a three-goal run in a span of just 2:22 midway through the third quarter to push a 7-5 lead to 10-5 with 7:28 remaining in the period. To that point, Maryland had controlled the tempo of the game and appeared to be in control. br br Hopkins (11-7) got back in it quickly as sophomore John Crawley scored back-to-back goals in a span of 39 seconds to slice the 10-5 deficit to 10-7. br br The Terps maintained that three-goal lead through the final four minutes of the third, but it took Johns Hopkins just over three minutes of fourth quarter action to draw even. A Joel Tinney strike opened the scoring in the final frame as he used a stick fake at 10 yards to get inside and score high to make it 10-8. When Crawley matched his career high with his fourth goal 70 seconds later and Ryan Brown picked the top corner on the run 59 seconds after that, the Blue Jays had drawn even for the first time since it was 1-1 late in the first quarter. br br The Blue Jays had a golden opportunity to take their first lead of the game a short time later, but a turnover on an extra-man opportunity and a Blue Jay penalty in transition led to a Matt Rambo extra-man goal with 9:59 on the clock. br br When Rambo completed his four-goal, two-assist effort on the day with a 12-yard rip to the far post with 7:24 remaining, the Terps again had a two-goal lead. From there, things really got interesting. br br Kyle Bernlohr, who would make just six saves in goal for the Terps, stoned Stanwick curling around the goal to maintain the two-goal margin and Maryland later had the ball with 2:36 left coming out of a timeout. A save by Johns Hopkins' Eric Schneider led to a Maryland penalty in transition and the Blue Jays set up their extra-man with 1:51 on the clock. It took all of 38 seconds for Shack Stanwick to work his way to the slot after a stick fake and score with 73 seconds showing. br br Ineffective on ground balls to that point, the Blue Jays came up with a crucial one on the ensuring faceoff as senior Phil Castronova scooped up the ball and raced into the offensive zone, where Hopkins called timeout with 1:13 to play. br br Out of the timeout, the Blue Jays worked a dodge and dump to perfection as Connor Reed got inside and forced a slide; when the slide came he found Shack Stanwick alone to Bernlohr's left. Stanwick went low and had Bernlohr beat, but his shot hit the outside of the net and Maryland grabbed possession and worked on a clear. br br Still, the Blue Jays had one last chance in transition as a Maryland turnover down the stretch led to another opportunity to draw even, but Bernlohr got a piece of a Tinney shot as time wound down and Maryland came up with the loose ball and ran out the final three seconds for the heart-stopping victory. br br That the Blue Jays had a shot to force overtime late didn't seem likely early on as Maryland jumped out to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Terps outshot the Blue Jays 16-5 in the opening 15 minutes and won 5-of-6 faceoffs in the period. br br The teams traded two-goal runs in the first 12 minutes of the second quarter as Hopkins sliced the 4-1 deficit to 4-3, only to see Maryland get consecutive goals a short time later to make it 6-3. A Wells Stanwick goal off an assist from Brown with 1:40 left in the first half accounted for a 6-4 halftime score. br br Like it had in the first half, Maryland scored four of the first five goals of the second, the final three of which pushed a 7-5 lead to the 10-5 margin. That set the stage for the Hopkins rally that tied it early in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell short as Rambo's two fourth-quarter tallies provided were the difference in yet another one-goal Hopkins-Maryland game. br br Crawley led Johns Hopkins with his four goals, while Wells Stanwick and Tinney added two goals apiece. Brown added one goal and two assists, while Schneider had 13 saves in goals. br br Maryland was led by Rambo's four-goal, two-assist effort, while Jay Carlson added three goals and one assist. Charlie Raffa won 14-of-26 faceoffs on the day for Maryland, which held advantages in shots (44-35) and ground balls (35-21). br br
