Newark, Del. (February 12, 2016)—Mount St. Mary's University rallied for a 14-11 win at Delaware in the season opener on Friday afternoon. Evan Gormley scored four goals while Bubba Johnson added a hat trick to lead the Mount in the victory. Trailing 9-6 five minutes into the third quarter, the Mount outscored Delaware, 8-to-2, the rest of the way to earn the win. Ryan Lamon started the comeback with his first goal of the season with 10:51 left in the third quarter to make the score 9-7. Will Hendrick followed with his first goal of the year two minutes later to make it a one-goal game. Gormley's third goal of the game tied the score at 9-9, but Delaware's Will Hirschmann scored with 1:42 left in the third quarter to give the Blue Hens (0-2) a 10-9 lead. The Mount (1-0) quickly erased that deficit by scoring twice in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Mike Moynihan scored an extra-man goal from right in front on a feed from Lamon 20 seconds into the quarter to tie the score. Lamon then ripped a shot from 10 yards out with 14:00 left in the game to give the Mount an 11-10 advantage. Gormley's fourth goal of the game came just 46 seconds later, giving the Mountaineers three goals in a span of 1:26. Johnson pushed the advantage to 13-10 when he pushed a loose ball rebound into the cage with 8:26 remaining. Delaware made it a two-goal game with 3:52 left on a Steve Delargy goal, but Tommy Lyons sealed the win when he scored into an empty net from midfield with 22 seconds left. Gormley led the Mount with the four-goal game while Johnson added three goals and an assist for a four-point day as well. Lamon finished with a pair of goals and an assist while Justin Gosnell and Mark Hojnoski each had a goal and an assist for the Mount. Matt Vierheller made nine saves for the Mount in the game, including four in the fourth quarter. Delargy led Delaware with three goals in the loss while Hirschmann added two. Delaware held a 37-to-34 advantage in shots in the game and a 35-to-25 edge in ground balls. Mike Celmer won 12-of-27 face-offs for the Mountaineers. In the first half, Delaware raced to an early 4-2 lead. Goals from Gormley, Hojnoski and Gosnell gave the Mount a 5-4 advantage in the second quarter, but the Blue Hens scored the final three goals of the first half to take a 7-5 lead a the intermission. The Mount returns to action on Saturday, February 20, with a 2:00 p.m. game at Towson. Game Notes: The Mount's 14 goals scored are the most by a Mount team since a 14-6 win over Georgetown on March 12, 2013…The Mount improves to 3-12 all-time against Delaware…The Mountaineers have won three of the past five matchups in the series.
