Hempstead, NY – Pride junior Josh Byrne recorded two goals and four assists and sophomore Brendan Kavanagh added a career-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead Hofstra to a 13-7 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Blue Hens of Delaware at James M. Shuart Stadium Saturday afternoon. Hofstra improved to 1-1 in the CAA and 7-4 overall this season with their sixth consecutive win over Delaware. The Blue Hens slipped to 1-1 in conference play and 4-8 on the year. Byrne tallied six points or more for the third time this season following a seven-point contest against NJIT (3-4) and six in his Hofstra debut at North Carolina (4-2). Kavanagh equaled his career-highs with two goals and two assists for a personal points-best on Saturday. It is the third time this season that he has tallied two goals after equaling the feat against Providence and Vermont, and the second time with two assists after a double-assist game against Georgetown. Seniors Korey Hendrickson, Brian von Bargen and Sam Llinares and junior Zach Franco each added two goals. Junior Trevor Kupecky posted a goal and two assists. Sophomore goalie Jack Concannon made seven saves for his seventh win of the year. Delaware was led by redshirt freshman Andrew Romagnoli with two goals and one assist and sophomore Dean DiSimone added two goals. Sophomore goalie Parker Ferrigan recorded 11 saves in the Delaware cage. After a scoreless first 11 minutes, Hofstra jumped on Delaware, scoring the first four goals of the contest to build a 4-0 lead 4:07 into the second quarter. Kupecky opened the scoring with 3:50 to play in the first with his eighth goal of the season. Just 51 seconds later, von Bargen made it 2-0 with his 22nd of the year, off a pass from Kavanagh. Hendrickson then scored back-to-back goals, getting his 20th of the year with 1:16 to play in the first and then his 21st just 4:07 into the second quarter. Kupecky assisted on both of Hendrickson's goals. Delaware got on the board a little over a minute later when senior Connor Frisina notched his eighth goal of the year to cut the deficit to 4-1 with 9:08 to play in the half. But Hofstra would score the next four goals, as Kavanagh scored his sixth of the year on the man-up and was followed by Byrne's 23rd and two by Llinares, his 22nd and 23rd, to boost the Pride lead to 8-1 with 1:37 to play in the half. Romagnoli would score his first of the day and 16th of the season just 35 seconds before halftime for Delaware to close the deficit to 8-2 at the break. Franco would add a man-up tally, his fourth goal of the season, and von Bargen would add his second of the game in the first 4:01 of the third quarter to boost the Hofstra lead to 10-2. Delaware would make a mini-run, scoring four of the next five goals after goals by senior Steve DeLargy, junior Paul Major and two by DiSimone, around Byrne's second of the game, to close to within five at 11-6 with 10:02 to play in the fourth quarter. But Franco would score his second man-up of the game less than two minutes later, and Kavanagh would add an extra man goal with just under two minutes to play for Hofstra, around Romagnoli's second of the game for UD, to thwart any Blue Hen rally thoughts. Hofstra outshot Delaware, 44-25 and picked up 33 ground balls to the Blue Hens' 26. Pride junior Kris Clarke also won 14 of 23 face-offs and the team converted on four of seven extra-man opportunities. Hofstra will begin a two-game conference road trip next Saturday, April 14 when they travel to Philadelphia to face the Dragons of Drexel at 4 p.m. The Pride will follow that contest with a trip to face UMass on Saturday, April 23 before returning home for their regular season finale on April 30 against Towson. Notes: - A ceremony was held Saturday morning for the dedication of the Fowler Family-Hofstra Men's Head Coach's Office. Three Fowler brothers, Bill, '74, Michael '79 and Joe '83, all played for the Pride and graduated from Hofstra. - Hofstra also honored the 1971 Pride team on the 45th anniversary of becoming the first Hofstra team to play in the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship in halftime ceremonies.
