COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men's lacrosse team defeated Delaware, 10-3, Sunday afternoon inside Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Senior Jesse King led the Buckeyes (2-1) offensively with five goals and six points. The defense held the Blue Hens (1-2) to just one goal over the last three quarters and did not allow a score in the final 27:42, with goalie Tom Carey making 11 saves in the game for the Buckeyes. The Buckeyes will close their three-game homestand at noon Saturday when they host Dartmouth inside WHAC. "I am impressed with our preparation on a short week and the improvement we made in several areas," Nick Myers, Ohio State head coach, said. "We still feel like we are a work in progress but we know this is another positive step." Ohio State scored the first goal of the game but trailed 2-1 after the first quarter. King put the Buckeyes on the board at 12:37 with an unassisted goal. At 8:53 Delaware's Brian Kormondy tied the game and he added a goal with five seconds left in the quarter to put the Blue Hens on top. Shots were 6-5 in favor of Ohio State in the quarter and Delaware's goalie made three saves. The Buckeyes took control in the second quarter, scoring five goals (with four from King) and shutting out Delaware. King scored at 12:36 off an assist from senior Turner Evans to tie the game at two and tallied man-up, assisted by junior Ryan Hunter, at 7:24, to put the Buckeyes in the lead. King added another goal one minute later and at 3:19, freshman Colin Chell picked up a groundball and scored for a 5-2 Buckeye advantage. On a fastbreak after the Buckeyes won the next faceoff, Christopher May found King in front and he scored at 2:55 for a 6-2 Ohio State lead. Ohio State outshot the Blue Hens, 8-6, in the quarter. Carey made four saves in the Buckeye cage. Delaware ended the Buckeyes' five-goal run at 12:42 when Jackson Finigan scored, making it a 6-3 game. The Buckeyes shut out Delaware the rest of the way, scoring twice in both the third and fourth quarters. In the third, junior Carter Brown set up senior Rick Lewis at 11:20 and Chell scored, assisted by King, at 4:39 for an 8-3 Buckeye lead. Ohio State had 15 shots in the quarter, holding Delaware to four. Delaware's goalie made six saves and Carey stopped three shots. In the fourth, Buckeye sophomore JT Blubaugh tallied at 12:22, assisted by senior David Planning, and Evans scored unassisted at 8:22 after picking up a groundball in front. Shots were 9-6 in favor of the Blue Hens in the stanza, with Carey making three saves to hold Delaware off the board. For the game, the Buckeyes outshot Delaware, 35-24, including 21-13 in the second half. Carey played all 60 minutes and had 11 saves for Ohio State. He has a 6.00 goals-against average and .654 save percentage this year. Delaware's Brett Anton made 12 saves in all 60 minutes. Christopher May won 11-of-16 faceoffs on the day and has won 43-of-57 this season (75.4 percent). Ohio State had the advantage in groundballs, 31-17. May had nine groundballs vs. the Blue Hens and has picked up 30 this season (10 per game). Junior Chris Mahoney had four groundballs and had two caused turnovers in the win, with senior Evan Mulchrone also causing two turnovers. King, who extended his point streak to 39 games (76g, 56a, 132p in the stertch), had the third five-goal game of his Buckeye career and first since April 12, 2014 vs. Michigan. It was his seventh career six-point day and he now leads the Buckeyes with seven goals and 12 assists on the year. He has 143 points for the Scarlet and Gray to rank 11th in program history and is 10th with 59 career assists. Brown had his 10-game goal-scoring streak ended but extended his point streak to 12 (19g, 11a, 30p). Hunter has at least one goal and point in each of his last nine games (20g, 4a, 44p). Planning is second on the squad with eight points this year and shares the assist lead with King with five each. Chell has two goals in each of his last two games and Blubaugh has a goal in each of his last three outings.
