ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team scored the first goal of the game but was held scoreless for the next 24 minutes of the first half, falling to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 17-8, on Saturday (Feb. 21) inside a sold-out Oosterbaan Field House. U-M was down only 2-1 at the end of the first quarter but was outscored by the Fighting Irish 7-1 in the second quarter and 8-6 in the second stanza. Sophomore Ian King tallied four goals and two assists, while junior/sophomore goalie Gerald Logan made 16 saves, with 12 coming in the first half. Following King's goal at the 9:23 mark of the first quarter, No. 2 Notre Dame went on a 9-0 run that was led by five points from All-America attackman Matt Kavanaugh, who finished the game with six points. Michigan put a stop to the run with 48 seconds to go in the half, as King fed senior Mike Francia, who beat Irish goalkeeper Shane Doss low-to-low to bring the score to 9-2 heading into the half. Michigan fought even with the No. 2 team in the nation in the third quarter at 4-4, with King going to two goals and an assist to bring the score to 12-6 at the 1:40 mark of the third. With Notre Dame going 7-of-13 at the dot in the first half, longstick Chase Brown stepped in and went 9-of-18, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers. Additionally, freshman defensive midfielder Parker McKee had four pickups, a new career best. Michigan returns to action Saturday (Feb. 28) at 1 p.m., as the Wolverines play host to the Canisius Golden Griffiths from Oosterbaan Field House.
