Senior Will Mazzone (Stony Brook, N.Y.) lead the Providence College men’s lacrosse team to a 12-8 victory over Holy Cross in the team’s first game on the newly constructed Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium on Feb. 12. Mazzone registered six of the Friars’ 12 goals, and also handed out two assists. The Crusaders got out to an early lead in the third minute of the game. Connor Sofield found the back of the net to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead. Mazzone and freshman Brendan Kearns (Wantagh, N.Y) followed with back-to-back goals. The first goal went to Mazzone off a feed from Kearns to tie the game, 1-1. Kearns then tallied the go-ahead goal with Mazzone getting credited for the assist. At the end of the first quarter the Friars led, 3-1. Mazzone was back at it shortly after the beginning of the second quarter, registering Providence’s fourth goal of the night and his second goal of the game. He was assisted on the play by rookie Joseph McHale (Bernardsville, N.J.). The Crusaders responded with a Jon Vogel goal with 9:58 remaining in the half. Mazzone then added to his game tally with two more unanswered goals at 8:08 and 6:53. His first was assisted by junior Ryan Schaffer (Plano, Texas), while his second was unassisted. Before the end of the half, Holy Cross registered two-consecutive goals cut the deficit to one (5-4). In the third quarter, the Friars extended their lead to 8-4 with three-consecutive goals, including two within a span of 2:46. The first of the three went, once again, to Mazzone for his fifth of the game, with Schaffer registering his second assist of the game. Kearns registered his second goal of the game and the Friars’ seventh goal overall with 6:47 remaining in the third quarter off of a Mazzone helper. Schaffer followed with Providence’s eighth goal off a feed from sophomore Nick Preston (Victoria, British Columbia). The closed the scoring in the third with a goal from Kevin Lux with 1:15 on the clock. Providence held an 8-5 lead heading into the fourth and final quarter. Mazzone was not the only Friar to register a series of goals on the night as Kearns stepped back onto the field in the fourth quarter to record back-to-back unanswered goals. His first goal happened within the first 30 seconds of play, assisted by freshman David Procopio (Syracuse, N.Y.), while his second found the back of the net with 13:00 minutes remaining in the game. The Friars led 10-5. The Crusaders rallied with three-consecutive goals in the 50th, 52nd and 53rd minutes of the game to make the score 10-8, however, the Friars weren’t finished scoring just yet. Mazzone registered his sixth goal of the game with 6:04 remaining on the clock in regulation. It marked a single-game career high for the senior attackman. Mazzone’s goal was assisted by Schaffer, which marked his fourth of the game. Providence scored its final goal of the night with 58 seconds remaining in the game and was credited to junior Conor Hilton (Needham, Mass.). He was unassisted on the play. Freshman Tate Boyce (Matthews, N.C.) returned to the net for the Friars to register 10 saves on the night, while the Crusaders’ goalkeeper Matt Brisolari recorded 12 stops. "We were very disappointed with our performance last week in that we let the moment overwhelm us," said head coach Chris Gabrielli. "Instead of bracing that game as an opportunity, we were tentative and tight. This week, we challenged the team to enjoy the moment, fall back on the fundamentals and just compete. We still turned the ball over too much, but we did so trying to make plays at full speed." "Our attack unit was fantastic tonight, led by Will Mazzone with six goals. We were pleased with their confidence, pace of play and overall skill level, especially in unsettled situations. Defensively, our close defense had each others backs and won some great battles individually. I thought James Barclay took it to another level tonight with his intensity and execution, holding Holy Cross' top scorer to one point." The Friars move to 1-1 overall on the season and will return to action on February 20 for a home game against Bryant at 1:00 p.m.
