CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Boston University men's lacrosse team opened its 2015 season with a convincing 18-6 win over Mercer on Saturday night at the Harvard Stadium Bubble. Despite a change of venue and an 8.5 hour delay from the 1 p.m. start at Nickerson Field that was originally on the docket, the Terriers were in control from the opening draw and never looked back after scoring the first three goals of the game and taking an 11-1 lead into halftime. The 18 goals and the 12-goal margin of victory are both program records. Two freshmen were impressive in their collegiate debuts, as Jack Wilson led the Terriers with five goals and classmate Ryan Hilburn dished out four assists in addition to scoring his first goal. Sophomore Cal Dearth also had five points thanks to three goals and two assists. Freshman Hayden Ruiz opened his collegiate account with a pair of goal while redshirt sophomore Sam Tenney and sophomore Adam Schaal each had two goals apiece. Schaal also added two assists for a four-point night. Sophomore Sam Talkow was dominant at the faceoff X, winning a career-high 18 of the 23 draws he took. Talkow also found the back of the net, as did sophomores Craig Zebrowski and Michael Carbone. For Carbone, his goal was the first of his collegiate career. Christian Carson-Banister began his second season as the Terriers netminder with a 10-save victory. He allowed just five goals in his 2015 debut and eventually gave way to two freshmen in Colin MacDougall (two saves) and Tommy Connelly. Sophomore Greg Wozniak had one helper and was terrific on the defensive end, causing three turnovers and collecting six ground balls. Dearth also caused three turnovers, with sophomore Henry Lee and freshman Isaac Lipton forcing two turnovers each. Wilson scored the first goal of the 2015 campaign nearly 2:30 into the proceedings when he took a feed from Schaal and didnt miss. Tenney and Schaal made it 3-0 not even five minutes into the game, but Mercer countered with a goal of its own to make it a 3-1 game. That was as close as Mercer came to mounting a comeback, as the Terriers rattled off the next eight goals to enter the half with an 11-1 lead. Seven different players scored in that stretch and five of the goals were assisted. BU finished the half 4-for-4 in man-up situations and concluded the contest going 5-of-7 with an extra man. Mercer tallied the first two goals of the third quarter, but BU scored three straight times to take a 14-3 lead and eventually hold a 14-4 advantage entering the final 15 minutes. Wilson tallied twice and Carbone collected the Terriers final goal before the Bears answered with the final marker of the game. The Terriers out-attempted Mercer, 52-29, and had 33 shots on goal to just 18 for the Bears. BU also had a man-down goal and caused 13 of the Bears 20 turnovers. BU will officially hit the road for its next five games, beginning with a trip to Buffalo, New York, to face Canisius on Feb. 14. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
