Hempstead, NY Pride senior Steve Romano recorded a career-high three goals but the Red Foxes of Marist scored nine goals in the middle two quarters to record an 11-8 victory over Hofstra in a non-conference game at James M. Shuart Stadium Tuesday night. The Red Foxes won their third consecutive game to improve to 8-3 on the season. Hofstra dropped its second straight contest and is now 4-7 on the year. Romano, a short-stick defensive midfielder, entered the game with one career goal and tallied goals in the second, third and fourth quarters for his first career hat-trick. Freshman Dylan Alderman added two goals and one assist and junior Brian von Bargen also added two goals. Sophomore Kris Clarke won 14 of 23 face-offs for the Pride. Marist was led by senior Colin Joka with three goals and one assist and sophomore J.D. Recor who added one goal and four assists. Junior Joseph Radin scored twice for the Red Foxes. Senior Dave Scarcello made 13 saves for his eighth win of the year. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the second quarter on goals by Drew Nesmith, Dillon Walker and Dominic Montemurro around Alderman's sixth goal of the year. But the Pride responded with Romano's first of the season at the 9:15 mark and von Bargen's fourth of the year less than a minute later to tie the contest at 3-3. But Marist scored twice in an eight-second span as Joka and Mike Begley dented the twine for a 5-3 lead at halftime. The Pride ran into some hard-luck hitting three pipes in the first 30 minutes. Hofstra wasted little time in the third quarter as Romano tallied his second of the contest just 23 seconds in to close the deficit to 5-4. But Marist scored three unanswered goals as Joka, Radin and Recor also buried the ball in the cage to boost the lead to 8-4 with 6:43 to play in the third. Pride sophomore Zachary Franco stopped the Marist run with his fifth of the year with 4:23 to play in the third quarter. But Gannon Morrison and Joka scored in the final 1:56 to give the Red Foxes a 10-5 heading into the fourth quarter. Hofstra made a run in the fourth quarter as Romano scored just eight seconds into the period off the face-off. Von Bargen then notched his second of the game with 8:09 to play and Alderman added a man-up goal 37 seconds after that to close the gap to 10-8. But Radin scored a man-up goal with 5:41 to play that took the Pride momentum away and boosted the lead back to three at 11-8. Despite outshooting the Red Foxes 11-5 in the final period, Hofstra was unable to put any more behind Scarcello in the Marist cage. Hofstra outshot Marist, 36-30 in the game while the ground balls were even at 26 each. For the first time in 39 games, Hofstra junior Sam Llinares was kept off the stat sheet as was senior Mike Malave, who saw his 17-game point streak end as well. Hofstra will return to action on Saturday, April 11 when they travel to Ithaca, NY to face the 10th-ranked Big Red of Cornell at noon.
