CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five Tar Heel players combined for 12 goals and UNC dominated the face-off circle in the final three quarters to emerge with a 14-6 victory over Furman in men’s lacrosse action at Fetzer Field Saturday afternoon. A crowd of 602 fans braved a 30 degree temperature at sun-soaked Fetzer Field to take in the action. UNC improved to 2-0 on the season while the Paladins, who lost a last-second heartbreaker to 2015 NCAA quarterfinalist Ohio State last Saturday, fell to 0-2. Luke Goldstock scored in his 19th straight game to lead the Tar Heel offense with three goals and an assist. Steve Pontrello had three goals, Patrick Kelly had two goals and an assist and Michael Tagliaferri added a pair of goals. Peyton Klawinski and Jordan Prysko also scored for the Heels. Jake Matthai recorded a pair of assists. Furman was led in the scoring column by David Williamson who had three goals while Scott Primeau had a pair of assists for the Paladins. UNC’s starting attack combined for eight goals and an assist while the first midfield unit had four goals and two assists. UNC outshot the Paladins in every quarter and finished with a 50-23 edge. UNC also won the ground ball battle 40-25 with junior midfielder Stephen Kelly leading the way with nine ground balls. After the Paladins won six of nine face-offs in the first quarter, UNC won 12 of the last 14 face-offs in the match, including all eight draws in the second half. Kelly finished 14 of 22 at the X for the Heels. Brian Balkam started in goal for the Tar Heels and played 58 minutes, making nine saves and allowing just five goals. He also had three ground balls and one caused turnover. Reilly McDermott went the whole way in goal for the Paladins and made 15 saves and allowed 14 goals. He also had four ground balls. After allowing 10 goals in the first half on 14 Tar Heel shots on goal, McDermott was great in the second half, making 10 saves and allowing just four goals. Furman finished with 17 turnovers and the Tar Heels had 12. The Paladins went 20 for 26 clearing while UNC was 17 for 19. Neither team scratched in extra-man situation as Furman was 0-for-4 and North Carolina 0-for-1. Carolina scored the first two goals of the game and never trailed as it improved to 3-0 all-time against Furman. Goldstock opened the scoring with the first goal of his hat trick at 10:44 of the initial period and Tagliaferri scored 1:33 later to make it 2-0. After a Furman tally, Goldstock scored his second unassisted goal of the first period at 6:29. Just over a minute later, the Heels made it 4-1 on a fast break goal with Chris Cloutier as he converted a feed by close defenseman Austin Pifani. The Paladins’ Jonah Moore scored with 3:11 left in the period but Tagliaferri scored his second goal of the first quarter at 1:10 and Peyton Klawinski scored an unassisted goal with 15 seconds left as the Tar Heels led 6-2 at the quarter break. Carolina ran its lead to 9-2 by scoring the first three goals of the second quarter. Senior midfielder Jake Matthai had two assists on the three goals in the scoring run. Steve Pontrello scored at 12:33, assisted by Matthai, Jordan Prysko scored three minutes later, assisted by Patrick Kelly, and then Goldstock finished off his hat trick at 6:24 with an assist by Matthai. After a goal by Chase Hancock for the Paladins, Chris Cloutier buried a goal with three seconds left in the half, making the score 10-3. Furman came out and cut the lead to 10-5 on back-to-back goal by David Williamson and the score remained at a five-goal lead for the Heels late into the third quarter before the Heels notched three goals in the final three minutes. Patrick Kelly scored an unassisted goal at 2:54 and just 24 seconds later Pontrello took a tremendous feed from Golstock from behind the cage and finished one-on-one against the goalie to make it 12-5. Patrick Kelly then scored an acrobatic goal with one second left in the third quarter, snaring a loose ball off the turf and scoring over the shoulder with less than a second to spare. Carolina made the most out of its end-of-the-quarter possessions, scoring with 15 seconds left in the first, three seconds left in the second and one second left in the third. Steve Pontrello of UNC and David Williamson of Furman traded unassisted goals in the fourth quarter, bringing the final to 14-6. Carolina will be back in action next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fetzer Field against the Hofstra Pride. Hofstra leads the all-time series against Carolina 6-5 but this will be only the second meeting in 12 games played in Chapel Hill. The teams last met in Chapel Hill in 2008 with the Tar Heels winning 13-9 at Kenan Stadium.
