Greenville, S.C. – Furman held a 5-2 lead in the fourth quarter, but Richmond rallied to down the Paladins, 6-5, in triple overtime. The win moves the Spiders to 8-3 on the year and 4-0 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Paladins to 2-8 on the season and 2-2 in SoCon play. Five different Paladins' scored Furman's five goals, while Furman's defense had one of its best games of the season. Conner Kipke anchored the Paladins' defense with three caused turnovers and five ground balls, while Reilly McDermott took the tough-luck loss in goal, despite being brilliant in the three overtime periods and making nine total saves. Alex Hatem scored the final two goals for the Spiders, who erased a three-goal deficit in the game's final 10 minutes to tie the game at five and send it to overtime. Both teams showed off their defensive units in the first half, as Richmond took a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game on a goal from Eric Haehl, the only goal of the first quarter. The Paladins responded by winning the second period's opening face-off and getting a goal from Stephen Wierzbicki on an assist from William Holcomb to tie the game at one. Furman then took advantage of a Richmond penalty with a man-up goal from Ben Levin to give the Paladins the 2-1 lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the half. Richmond then tied the game on an unassisted goal from Austin Brown with 1:41 to go in the half, sending the teams to halftime tied at two. The Paladins used a goal from David Williamson on an assist from Wierzbicki to regain the lead at 3-2 with 9:57 left in the third, before doubling the lead at 4-2 with 4:31 remaining on a shot by William Holcomb. Furman upped its lead to 5-2 in the fourth period on a goal by Scott Primeau, but Richmond responded, using three-straight goals and solid defense to send the game to overtime tied at five. The Paladins won the opening face-off in the first overtime period and had a good look at a shot, but Richmond had the majority of the chances, until a 30 second violation gave the Paladins the ball back with a chance for the win. Furman couldn't capitalize, however, and the game went to double overtime. Reilly McDermott made two huge saves in the second overtime period, but Furman couldn't capitalize offensively, and the game went to a third overtime period, where the Paladins again won the opening face-off but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end. Following a Furman turnover, Richmond's Alex Hatem scored off an assist from Eric Haehl to give the Spiders the sudden-death, triple overtime victory at 6-5. Furman is back in action next Saturday, taking on Mercer in Macon, Ga., at 12:00 p.m.
