Albany, N.Y. - Senior Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) scored five goals and added four assists to lead the No. 17 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team to a 16-13 win over Vermont in the first semifinal of the America East Championship. Junior Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) tallied his seventh career hat trick and third this season, second against Vermont. Sophomore Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.) and junior Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) recorded two goals apiece. Junior Frank Lucatuorto (Stony Brook, N.Y.) and sophomore Jay Lindsay (Burlington, Ontario) enjoyed great games from the 'X'. Lucatuorto was 11 of 18 with a game-high 10 ground balls and Lindsay was 10 of 15 with four ground balls. The Seawolves (13-4) will make their seventh appearance in the America East Championship game and are in search of their fourth title (2002, 2010, 2012). Ian MacKay scored four goals for Vermont (6-10). Cam Milligan had three goals and three assists. Quotes . . . Jim Nagle "Happy to get the win. I think Vermont improved more than anyone in the country since we last played them so hats off to their coaching staff and players. Vermont has a couple of exceptional players and they're really good on the ground so getting ground balls was a big focus for us this week in practice. I think it showed (52-30 Stony Brook on ground balls). I think that had to do with the face-off 'X'." "We've played 17 games this year so anytime you play that many games, there's going to be ups and downs. The emotional side of things has kind of played our way recently." Challen Rogers "I made a decision to go to the net a little more tonight. I tried to draw more slides in order to create some open looks for the other guys. Some shots fell for me tonight." Mike Rooney "For my game, we've been playing together for the past three years so a lot of it is chemistry. I'm just trying to play hard and work on the fundamentals that Coach Nagle preaches every day. Whoever we play Saturday, we're going to play hard." Key Moment Vermont led 4-3 after the first quarter, but Stony Brook controlled the next two quarters, outscoring the Catamounts, 11-4, over the next 30 minutes. Rooney had three goals and three assists during the span. By The Numbers Rogers had eight goals against Vermont this season. He had a career-high five against the Catamounts in Burlington in March. Rooney has tallied at least nine points in a game four times this season. Stony Brook outscored Vermont, 6-3, in the second quarter. The Seawolves outscored the Catamounts, 5-1, in the third quarter. They've outscored their opponents, 70-36, in the third quarter this season. Rooney totaled 20 points (8g, 12a) against Vermont this season. Junior Dylan Curry (East Meadow, N.Y.) added a goal and six ground balls. News & Notes Eastwood's 61 goals are tied for 18th all-time in a single season in Division I history and the second-most in a season in America East history. Rooney is the fourth player in America East history to reach the 100-point mark (Albany's Lyle Thompson - 2013 & 2014 and Miles Thompson - 2014; Delaware's John Grant '99). Junior Matt Schultz became the 19th player in school history to reach 100 career points with a goal and two assists. Rooney's 62 assists are the third-most in a season in America East history. Stony Brook has outscored its opponents, 69-48, in the second quarter this season. In five career games against Vermont, Rooney had 15 goals and 15 assists.
