DENVER - The [1/1] University of Denver men's lacrosse team used a 6-2 run to start and a 7-1 run to finish the game to take down in-state rival Air Force 16-6 on Saturday morning at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Sophomore Connor Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) became the first player in program history to have eight-plus points twice in the same season, finishing with six goals and two assists in his second game with the Crimson and Gold. Freshman FOGO Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) had another successful day from the faceoff X, finishing the morning 17-for-21. Baptiste is now 42-for-55 from the X in his first two collegiate games, and has 23 ground balls in his first 120 minutes. Senior goaltender Ryan LaPlante (Fort Collins, Colo.) made five saves in 55 minutes on Saturday. The Pioneers raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first quarter on goals from Berg, Connor Cannizzaro and junior attackman Bryce Parietti (Centennial, Colo.). Air Force responded with two man-up goals off an un-releasable penalty on sophomore Tyler Pace (Coquitlam, B.C), and it was 3-2 Denver with 11:24 to play in the first. Connor Cannizzaro and Chesapeake Bayhawks draftee Erik Adamson (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) closed out the quarter with a goal apiece in the final 63 seconds to restore Denver's lead at three. The two teams alternated two goals a side to start the second quarter, before sophomore Zach Miller (Steamburg, N.Y.) and Connor Cannizzaro put back-to-back goals together to give Denver a 9-4 lead with 4:23 left in the opening half of the home campaign. After an Air Force goal to cut the lead to four again, Connor's brother Sean Cannizzaro (Cazenovia, N.Y.) closed out the scoring in the first half with five seconds left. Connor Cannizzaro scored the first two goals of the second half, his eighth and ninth of the year to complete his first-career sock trick (previous career high 3). Adamson added his second of the year to complete a 4-0 run (spanning back to Sean Cannizzaro's goal to end the half). Air Force's Chris Walsch stopped the run, but a man-up goal from freshman Brendan Bomberry (Ohsweken, Ontario) from FIL World Championship and DU teammate Miller made it 14-6. Junior Colin Woolford (Norwalk, Conn.) scored his fourth career goal and sophomore Jake Woodring (Eden Prairie, Minn.) got his second career goal to close out the scoring. The Pioneers held a 41-23 advantage in shots and controlled the loose balls 31-14, including 20-8 in the second half. Denver will take on Furman Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Holaday Athletic Center on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy. Fans and media will not be permitted into Sunday's game due to facility restrictions. There will be live tweeting from @DU_MLAX, and box scores after every quarter.
