ITHACA, N.Y. -- Colgate rallied with five straight goals to take a late lead in regulation, but in the end, No. 7 Cornell had the late magic to earn a hard-fought 10-9 overtime victory over its Central New York rival on Tuesday evening at Schoellkopf Field. "We knew Colgate would give us everything they could throw at us," said Matt Kerwick, the Richard M. Moran Head Coach of Lacrosse. "They're a good team and we told the team to be ready to play sixty-plus Unfortunately, when we got to 8-4 I thought we had a couple careless turnovers and we didn't bury the ball like we should have and to their credit they kept battling. We knew they would." Senior Dan Lintner scored the game-tying goal with 63 seconds left in regulation and classmate Matt Donovan ended the game with 64 seconds left in the first sudden victory extra period. Both goals were set in motion by faceoff wins by Domenic Massimillian. That wasn't a rare sight in his first extended playing time on Schoellkopf Field, as the sophomore won 15-of-22 at the "x", including the final two. Donovan's quick crease roll ended in the game winner on the Big Red's second possession of overtime and gave him a career-high eight points on the night. That came nearly exactly four minutes of game time after his fourth assist of the night ended in the crosse of Lintner, who buried the quick-stick to knot the game at 9-9 and send it to overtime. Massimillian won the ensuing faceoff with a minute to play, but Cornell could not put a game-winning attempt on goal. The Big Red won the opening faceoff of overtime and immediately called a timeout, but an unforced turnover gave the ball to the visitors. Colgate gave it right back on an errant pass and Cornell milked a minute off the clock before Donovan deposited the game-winner over Burke's shoulder to end the contest. Donovan ended the day with four goals and four assists, while Lintner scored four times. John Hogan and Connor Buczek each chipped in a goal and an assist as the only four Big Red scorers on the day. Massimillian won a game-high 11 ground balls, while Jordan Stevens caused two turnovers and won five ground balls on the defensive side of the ball. The victory overshadowed a valiant performance in the cage by Colgate's Brandon Burke, who made 16 stops in taking the hard-luck loss. Chase Wittich had two goals and three assists and three others had two goals apiece. Leading scorer Ryan Walsh was held without a point with Jorand Stevens doing a majority of the work against him. "Walsh is one of the better attackman in the game and Jordan has done it game-in and game-out for us," said Kerwick. "He did it against Lyle Thompson from Albany. He did it against Oberbeck from Yale. He did it again tonight. We challenge him to match up on these great attackman and he consistently does it. At the end of the game those attackman know they've been through a tough game because Jordy gets after them and he's one of the best." Donovan posted five first half points and Massimillian won 7-of-11 faceoffs in the first 30 minutes. After controlling the first quarter and taking a 4-1 lead, the Raiders took the momentum of a highlight-reel save by Burke at the horn into the second quarter. The Raiders scored three of the next four to get back within 5-4 before Donovan scored a highlight reel goal of his own on a tight angled quick-stick goal with 46 seconds remaining before halftime. That ended Colgate's three-goal run. The second half saw Cornell extend the lead to 8-4 before the Raiders ripped off the final two goals of the third and three more in the fourth, taking its first lead of the night at 9-8 with 3:34 left in regulation. The Big Red finally came alive after a 23:58 scoreless streak when Donovan's pass to Lintner was on target, as was the senior's shot to beat the red-hot Burke to knot the game and set up the wild finish.
