AMHERST, Mass. - Brendan Hegarty and Tyler Bogart combined for five goals as Bogart had his second straight multi-goal game, but a late run in the fourth quarter pushed No. 7 Towson past the Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team 11-8 Saturday at Garber Field. The result moves Towson to 10-1 (2-0 CAA) on the season, while the Minutemen are now 4-6 (0-2 CAA). UMass won the race to the scoreboard early when Hegarty took a feed from Bogart and fired a shot home just 1:37 into the contest. Just over four minutes later, the Minutemen took a 2-0 lead when Dan Muller set up Bogart for his eighth goal of the season. Towson responded with a four-goal run over 7:49 that included two tallies from Joe Seider as the first quarter wound down, giving the Tigers a 4-2 advantage as the period came to a close. The teams traded goals throughout the second quarter, beginning with a man-up score from UMass’ Gianni Bianchin with 11:48 to play in the half. Hegarty and Ben Spencer later contributed goals, separated by tallies from Towson’s Tyler Young and Jon Mazza. Hegarty logged his third goal of the day with 3:13 left, sending the teams into halftime with the score tied 6-6. Shane Rinkus and Bogart each helped bring the Minutemen within one of Towson in the second half, but fourth-quarter goals from Ryan Drenner and Mike Lowe helped seal the victory for the Tigers. Noah Rak and Tom Meyers once again split time on faceoffs for the Minutemen, with Rak winning 15-of-19 and grabbing seven ground balls in the process. Meyers recorded a faceoff win in the first quarter, finishing the day 1-for-4. The win in goal went to Towson’s Tyler White (10-1), who made six saves. Sean Sconone (0-2) was hooked with the loss for UMass despite making eight stops. UMass also recognized members of the 1976 men’s lacrosse team at halftime. Led by head coach Dick Garber, the squad earned the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Tournament and won 10 games before finishing the season ranked sixth in the country. The Minutemen are back in action on Saturday, April 16, continuing their conference slate with a trip to Fairfield, Conn. and Fairfield University. Opening faceoff between the Minutemen and Stags is set for 1 p.m.
