LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Ryan Joseph and Sean Doyle scored two goals apiece, and Sam Grinberg backstopped a stellar defensive effort that helped carry the Bucknell men's lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory over No. 19/14 Bryant on Saturday at frigid Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison never trailed in the game and improved to 1-1 on the season with the Patriot League opener already looming next week. After conceding 12 goals in last week's loss at Delaware, the Bucknell defense was on point in this one. The Bison pitched a shutout in the first half, allowed three goals in the first part of the third quarter, then turned in another 22 straight scoreless minutes before Bryant tacked on two in the final 54 seconds of the game. Grinberg tallied 13 saves, including a brilliant two-save flurry in the fourth quarter while Bucknell was still nursing two-goal lead. Long-stick defensive midfielder Alex Spring logged four ground balls and two caused turnovers, and the Bison held the Bulldogs to 10-for-16 clearing efficiency. The defensive performance was even more impressive considering that they were incorporating a freshman -- Lukas Munoz -- into the starting lineup for the first time. Doyle scored the only goal of the first quarter at the 5:18 mark, then Joseph scored on two lefty rockets in the second quarter, both assisted by Thomas Flibotte. After going scoreless in the first half, Bryant needed only 15 seconds to cash in after the break. It was an unlucky one to give up from Bucknell's standpoint, as Spring made a great stick check to get the ball loose from a Bryant middie, but the ball leaked right to Tucker James on the crease for a point-blank goal. Kyle Shanahan quickly answered for the Bison, but goals from Tom Kennedy and Cam Ziegler cut the margin to 4-3 with 8:27 to go in the third. After giving up a lead in the second half last week at Delaware, the Bison refused to do so in this one. Doyle scored perhaps the biggest goal of the day, finishing a terrific feed from Joseph to make it a 5-3 game with 7:14 left in the third. Brock Ghelfi beat a defender to the goal for his first of the year midway through the fourth quarter, and freshman Will Sands followed off a restart for a commanding 7-3 lead with 4:10 to go. That four-goal cushion would prove useful as Collins Gantz and Ryan Sharpe scored for Bryant in the final minute, the latter coming with 22 seconds left. The Bulldogs won another faceoff, but the Bison forced a turnover as time expired. Bucknell committed only 11 turnovers in the game, compared to 19 for Bryant. The Bison finished with a 36-33 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs led 33-27 in ground balls. First Team All-America faceoff specialist Kevin Massa had seven of those ground balls for Bryant. Massa and the Bulldogs won 12 of the 16 faceoffs, although Bucknell's Sam Hahn and Eric Monfort did a good job forcing scrums to limit fastbreak opportunities coming off the draw. After only two non-league warmups, the Bison must quickly turn their attention to league play. Over the next three Saturdays they will play at Navy, host Colgate, and then travel to Lehigh.
