BALTIMORE, MD - The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team honored a lost teammate and helped head coach Dave Pietramala become the winningest coach in school history on Saturday as the Blue Jays jumped to a 6-0 lead and never looked back in a 16-4 win against visiting UMBC at Homewood Field. Johns Hopkins was playing its first game since freshman Jeremy Huber passed away suddenly in his room on campus on January 26. Sporting Huber's #19 on their jerseys and helmets and with his number painted on the field right in front of the team bench, the Blue Jays rode the emotion of playing to honor Huber and the quick start to Pietramala's 159th victory at Homewood. Pietramala, who was honored in a brief post-game ceremony, passed Hall of Famer Bob Scott on Johns Hopkins' career victory list. He entered the game tied with Scott, who won 158 games as the Blue Jays' coach from 1955-74; Scott joined Pietramala for the on-field post-game ceremony. Pietramala is now 159-55 in his 15th season at Johns Hopkins, while Scott was 158-55. Any drama as to whether this would be the day Pietramala passed Scott was over early as the Blue Jays needed less than 12 minutes to grab the six-goal lead and pushed the lead to nine before intermission. Four unassisted goals in the opening 10 minutes, including a pair by freshman Shack Stanwick, gave the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead before junior Ryan Brown took over. Brown, who scored 40 goals last season, scored twice in a span of less than two minutes late in the opening period to account for the 6-0 lead. The Retrievers temporarily halted the run when Dylan McDermott dodged to the goal and scored from in close early in the second quarter, but the first career goal by freshman midfielder Joel Tinney and two more from Brown, (in a span of 43 seconds) pushed the lead to 9-1. Brown's fourth goal was followed 12 seconds later by a strike from senior long stick midfielder Michael Pellegrino to make it 10-1 before the Retrievers closed the half with a goal by Nate Lewnes in the final minute of the second quarter. Any hopes for a UMBC comeback were dashed in the opening six minutes of the third quarter as Brown sandwiched his fifth and sixth goals of the game around an unassisted goal by sophomore Cody Radziewicz. The teams combined for five fourth-quarter goals with Brown closing out his seven-goal day, Stanwick finishing off a hat trick in his first career game and freshman Pat Fraser smoking home an extra-man goal. UMBC's Pat Young, scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals for the Retrievers to account for the final scoring. Brown's seven goals are one shy of his career high and mark his third career game with five or more goals, while Stanwick added the three goals and one assist in his career debut. Wells Stanwick added three assists and Fraser had one goal and two assists in his first collegiate game. The Blue Jays' highly-touted freshman class accounted for five goals and five assists and rookie Hunter Moreland won 8-of-11 faceoffs and grabbed a team-high seven ground balls as well. Young was the only multi-point scorer for the Retrievers, who were outshot 47-23 and lost the ground ball battle 42-23. The Retrievers did get a spark from freshman goalie David Pisanic, who played the final 19:54 and allowed just three goals while posting eight saves. It will be a quick turnaround for the Blue Jays, who will make the short trip Towson to take on the Tigers at 6 pm on Tuesday, February 10.
