CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The fourth-ranked North Carolina mens lacrosse team jumped out to a five-goal first half lead before fending off a pair of second half rallies to beat No. 9 Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon 13-11 at Navy Field. Because of inclement weather earlier in the week in Chapel Hill, the game was moved to Navy Field and 1,114 fans braved the elements to see the Tar Heels prevail for the eighth time in its last nine meetings with the Blue Jays. UNC is now 4-0 on the season while Johns Hopkins is 2-2. Up next for the Tar Heels is No. 1-ranked Denver. The Tar Heels will host the Pioneers next Friday at 4 p.m. on Fetzer Field in a game to be nationally televised by ESPNU. Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey each scored their 100th career goals in the game. Bitter finished with four goals and an assist. Sankey had three goals and three assists. Sophomore Luke Goldstock added a hat trick for UNC and Chad Tutton had a goal and two assists. This is the third time in four games that all three starting attackmen have recorded hat tricks in the same game (Furman, UMass and Johns Hopkins). Prior to 2015, the last time a UNC attack trio had accomplished that was in April 2009 when Bart Wagner, Gavin Petracca and Billy Bitter did it in an ACC Tournament win over Maryland. Johns Hopkins was led offensively by a brilliant performance from Ryan Brown who had three goals and three assists. John Crawley and Shack Stanwick each had a pair of goals for the Blue Jays. Statistically, the Blue Jays held a slight advantage in every category (42-38 shots), (38-33 ground balls), 15-12 (face-offs). The difference came down to Carolinas higher shooting percentage as UNC scored 13 goals on 38 shots while the Blue Jays notched 11 goals on 42 shots. UNC placed 21 of its 38 shots on goal while Hopkins was under 50 percent on goal (20 of 38). The Tar Heels jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Luke Goldstock, assisted by Jimmy Bitter 6:12 into the first quarter. After a UNC turnover, Johns Hopkins scored 28 seconds later as Brown recorded the first of his three goals assisted by Joe Carlini. Carolina claimed the lead for good 12 seconds later off a face-off win as long-stick middie Evan Connell fed Michael Tagliaferri for his first goal of the season with 8:08 left in the quarter. The next two goals for the Tar Heels were of the history-making variety with Sankey scoring on a brilliant shot from the left wing at 5:15 for his 100th career goal. It took just 1:40 for Sankey to assist his senior line mate Bitter on his 100th career goal, giving the Heels a 4-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Bitter got his second goal of the game a little over a minute into the second quarter off an assist by Tutton who matched his career high for assists in a game with two. This is the fourth time Tutton has had two goals in a game. Hopkins answered with an extra-man goal by John Crawley at 9:22 of the quarter before UNC got back-to-back goals by Sankey and Bitter to take the lead to 7-2 with 4:33 left in the half. Joel Tinneys unassisted goal for the Blue Jays with 2:37 left in the half cut the Blue Jays deficit to 7-3 and it started a four-goal run that extended past halftime into the third quarter. Carolina outshot the Blue Jays 19-15 in the first half. Eric Schneider made seven of his eight saves on the day in the opening 30 minutes as 14 of Carolinas 19 shots in the opening 30 minutes were on cage. UNC goalkeeper Brian Balkam made five first half saves while allowing three goals. Junior Kieran Burke made four second half saves for UNC while Schneider had one save after intermission. Both teams shot the lights out in the second half as 14 goals were scored combined on 19 shots on goal. Hopkins came out in the second half and by the halfway mark of the third period had cut the UNC lead to a single goal. A man up score by John Crawley, assisted by Brown, made it 7-6 with 7:34 to play in the period. Just as quickly, UNC scored three times in a matter of 1:19 to reclaim a four-goal lead at 10-6. Luke Goldstock scored off Chad Tuttons assist at 5:40. Carolina won the ensuing face-off and Tate Jozokos fed Goldstock for a goal 16 seconds later as the sophomore attackman earned his hat trick. Just 1:03 later, Bitter notched his fourth goal of the game at 4:21 off Sankeys second helper of the afternoon. Hopkins cut the UNC lead to 10-7 before the end of the quarter but UNC came back to score the first two goals of the final period. Sankey scored on an acrobatic one-on-one move at 13:39 and he then fed Brent Armstrong for a nifty alley-oop goal at 10:37 to give UNC a 12-7 lead. It was Armstrongs first goal of the season. But as expected, Hopkins did not go quietly. Goals by Brown, Shack Stanwick and Wells Stanwick cut the UNC lead to 12-10 with 7:47 left in the game. Carolinas Zach Powers was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty while the last of those three goals was scored. It gave Hopkins the ball, down two goals and up a man for a minute. But just 11 seconds into the EMO opportunity for the Blue Jays, Jake Bailey stripped Wells Stanwick and claimed the ground ball. The Tar Heels killed off their penalty and drew one on JHU before calling a timeout with 6:28 to play. UNC executed perfectly after the timeout as Patrick Kelly fed Chad Tutton for a 13-10 lead with 6:01 left in the game. The two teams then traded turnovers before Shack Stanwick scored off an assist by Tinney with 2:45 to play. The Blue Jays won the next faceoff and called timeout with 2:37 to play but Ryan Browns pass sailed over the end line, giving UNC possession. The Tar Heels turned the ball over on the clear but got it right back when Sankey caused a turnover by Nick Fields as Hopkins tried to clear. Jimmy Bitter got the ground ball and UNC called timeout with 1:37 left and killed off the remainder of the clock to finish with the victory.
