SYRACUSE, NY - In a game of runs, it was top-ranked Syracuse that had the longest one and the last one as the Orange rallied from an early four-goal deficit and knocked off visiting Johns Hopkins, 13-10, at the Carrier Dome Saturday afternoon. Syracuse improves to 6-0 on the year with the victory, while the Blue Jays slip to 3-4 with the loss. Johns Hopkins trailed by three late in the second quarter before rallying to tie and later trailed by two before knotting the game at 10-10 with back-to-back extra-man goals in the first 2:06 of the fourth quarter. But it was Syracuse goalie Bobby Wardwell who came up with the key play as he got a foot on a Ryan Brown shot with just under eight minutes remaining; Syracuse came up with the ground ball and Kevin Rice found Dylan Donahue alone on the backside in transition to make it 11-10 with 7:39 to play. An unassisted goal by Henry Schoonmaker just over 90 seconds later and an empty net goal by Randy Staats with 1:22 left closed out the scoring for the Orange. Hopkins had gotten off to the quick started it needed as the Blue Jays led 3-0 less than six minutes into the game on the strength of goals by Kieran Eissler, Brown and Connor Reed. SU got one back less than a minute after Reed's goal as Hakeem Lecky dodged from the top and smoothly worked his way in tight to make it 3-1, but Brown and John Crawley scored in a 31-second span a short time later to give Hopkins a 5-1 lead less than 11 minutes into the game. Hopkins led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter and still had the three-goal lead as the second-quarter clocked ticked under the eight-minute mark, but a Schoonmaker strike ignited a 6-0 spurt for the Orange that turned the 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead. Six different players scored during the spree for the Orange, who fired 14 shots at Blue Jay goalie Eric Schneider in the second quarter. The brothers Stanwick got the Blue Jays even at 8-8 as Wells Stanwick came from behind the goal and got his hands free late in the second quarter to make it 8-6 at the half and Shack Stanwick scored consecutive goals just over two minutes apart midway through the third to knot the game. Coupled with his previous goal, the goal Wells Stanwick scored and two goals earlier in the day by older sister Covie Stanwick for Boston College, Shack Stanwick's second goal was the 1,000th for a member of the Stanwick family at the college level. After fighting back from the three-goal deficit, the Blue Jays found themselves down by two at the end of the third quarter as Staats scooped up the loose change in front of the goal and fired one home from 10 yards and Nicky Galasso scored from in tight on a quick feed to the crease from Rice with just 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Hopkins took advantage of a pair of Syracuse penalties early in the fourth quarter as Crawley fired one home off the post from the wing and freshman Patrick Fraser blew one under the crossbar from the opposite wing just over 90 seconds later to make it 10-10. Wardwell, who had just two saves in the first three quarters, came up with the key save on Brown five minutes later and the Donahue goal followed quickly after to jump-start the game-deciding spree for Syracuse. Staats led Syracuse with four goals, while Galasso and Schoonmaker added two goals each. The Orange got another strong performance at the X from Ben Williams, who won 16-of-27 faceoffs and had a game-high 11 ground balls. Williams' 11 ground balls fueled a decisive win for SU in that category as the Orange won the ground ball battle 36-20. Brown and Shack Stanwick had two goals and two assists each, while Eissler and Wells Stanwick added one goal and one assist each. Schneider won the goalie battle as he posted 13 saves. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 21 as the Blue Jays will welcome Virginia to Homewood Field. Faceoff is set for 6 pm. - 30 -
