March 21, 2015 Box Score BALTIMORE, MD - In a game that featured nine ties and six lead changes, it was seventh-ranked Virginia that had the final rally as the Cavaliers scored twice in the final 94 seconds of regulation and then got the game-winner just 1:31 into overtime to cap a 16-15 victory against 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins at Homewood Field Saturday evening. The Cavaliers improve to 6-2 with the victory, while the Blue Jays slip to 3-5 with the loss. Hopkins had trailed 13-12 before rallying with three goals in a four-minute span midway through the fourth quarter to grab a 15-13 lead. The Blue Jays then had a 30-second a 6-on-4 advantage at the 2:45 mark, but the Cavalier defense held and that set the stage for a wild ending. After the Virginia defense came up with a loose ball and the Cavaliers cleared, a slow-developing substitution on both sides ended with Tyler German getting his hands free from the top of the box and ripping one inside the far post. Still, the Blue Jays won the ensuing faceoffs and called timeout with 1:24 remaining, only to quickly turn the ball over and have the Cavaliers go the other way. After working the ball around, senior Ryan Tucker found himself 12 yards from the goal with a time-and-room offering that Blue Jay goalie Eric Schneider got a piece of, but couldn't stop. The goal was Tucker's fifth of the game and forced what the ninth and final tie of the game. Virginia won the ensuing faceoff, drew a one-minute penalty for a slash and held the ball for overtime. In the extra session, a patient Cavalier offense eventually got the Blue Jay defense moving and Ryan Lukacovic found Greg Coholan alone on the wing. Coholan stepped in from eight yards and beat Schneider, who was screened by a defender, to end the back-and-forth affair. Coholan ended what he began as he ignited a game-opening three-goal run for the Cavaliers that also included strikes by A.J. Fish and Tucker in the opening five minutes. Freshman Joel Tinney got the Blue Jays on the board less than a minute after Tucker's goal and the 3-1 Virginia lead held until late in the first quarter, when Cody Radziewicz ignited a five-goals-in-five-minute spree for the Blue Jays. Radziewicz scored the first and last goals in the run, which also included Tinney's second of the game. The 6-3 Blue Jay lead was gone by halftime as Tucker bookended a three-goal Virginia run to end the half. The 6-6 tie at intermission was just the second of the nine ties. A crazy third quarter that saw 10 combined goals on 17 total shots saw Hopkins go up 8-6, fall behind 9-8, retake the lead at 10-9 and trail 11-10 as the clocked ticked down in the period, only to have Tinney score with 1.4 seconds remaining after a long scramble. German had given the Cavaliers the 11-10 lead with 24 seconds remaining in the period, but a long scramble on the ensuring faceoff eventually ended with Tinney scooping a ground ball off a save and firing home his third goal of the game. Virginia's Zed Williams, who had scored twice in the third quarter, wrapped a pair of goals in the first 6:16 of the fourth quarter around a Holden Cattoni extra-man goal for the Blue Jays to give the Cavaliers a 13-12 lead with 8:44 remaining. When Cattoni scored twice and Connor Reed added one in a three-goal Hopkins run that made it 15-13 Blue Jays with 4:43 remaining, the momentum, which had swung wildly throughout, appeared to be on JHU's side. The two-goal lead held until those final 94 seconds, when Virginia got the German and Tucker goals that forced overtime and eventually set the stage for Coholan to end what he had started more than two hours earlier. Tucker led the Cavaliers with five goals and two assists and Williams added the four goals and one assist. Coholan (2g, 2a) and German (3g) were the only other multi-point producers for the Cavaliers, who got 13 saves from Matt Barrett in goal. Cattoni, who entered the game with five goals on the year, scored four times to match his career high, while Tinney added his second career hat trick and two assists for a personal best five points. Wells Stanwick and Shack Stanwick both contributed one goal and one assist and Radziewicz had the two goals to pace Hopkins offensively. Johns Hopkins held a decisive advantage on faceoffs as Drew Kennedy was 14-of-20 with eight ground balls, while freshman Hunter Moreland won 10-of-13 and added four ground balls. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 28 when the Blue Jays welcome Rutgers to Homewood Field. The game will mark the first meeting between the two teams since 1998 and will also be the first Big Ten game in school history.
