BALTIMORE, MD -- The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team had seen this before. Twice previously this season the Blue Jays had gone to overtime, only to drop a pair of heart-breakers to Princeton and Virginia. On Saturday night at Homewood Field, the had a different ending as freshman Joel Tinney scored off a feed from senior Wells Stanwick with seven seconds left in the second overtime to lift the Blue Jays to an 11-10 victory against Penn State. Nothing that happened in the first 30 minutes made any of the nearly 3,000 in the attendance think Hopkins would need overtime. On the flip side, a different Penn State team emerged from the locker room for the second half and appeared to have the Blue Jays on the ropes several times. In the end, it was the seventh point by a senior and a career-high-tying fifth by a freshman that were the difference. Penn State (3-8, 0-3 B1G) erased a 6-2 deficit late in the second quarter with a 5-0 run that saw Pat Manley score all four of his goals in a 12-minute span to turn the four-goal deficit into a 7-6 lead. The Nittany Lions led 7-6, 8-7 and 9-8, but the fifth goal of the night for Hopkins' Ryan Brown and the second of the evening for Stanwick turned the 9-8 deficit into a 10-9 lead with just 87 seconds left in regulation. Penn State wouldn't need all 87 of those seconds, just 54 as Mike Sutton was on the back-end of a flurry of Nittany Lion shots down the stretch and he knotted the game at 10-10 with 33 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Hopkins (5-6, 2-1 B1G) fired six shots at Penn State goalie Connor Darcey in the two overtimes and he twice stoned Stanwick on the doorstep, once in each extra period, to keep the game tied. His counterpart, junior Will Ryan, was making his first career start and came up with a big save of his own in the second overtime to give the Blue Jays possession with less than a minute remaining before a third overtime would be needed. Tinney would have none of a third extra period as he took the feed from Stanwick about 10 yards from goal to Darcey's left, dropped down and went low to low to complete his hat trick and set off a wild celebration. All three Johns Hopkins overtime games this season have been settled directly in front of the Blue Jay bench at Homewood Field -- this time it was the team in white that felt joy instead of heartbreak. Hopkins outshot Penn State 21-12 in the opening 30 minutes and had leads of 5-1 and 6-2 as Tinney and Brown both scored twice in the opening 30 minutes. Manley got the first of his four with just four seconds left in the first half to make it 6-3 at intermission. By the time he completed his four-goal night with 3:03 left in the third quarter, Penn State had the first of its three one-goal leads - none of which held as Tinney, who had a hand in each of the final three Johns Hopkins goals on the night, sealed a much-needed overtime victory with his third of the night. Stanwick totaled two goals and five assists for seven points, while Brown added five goals and Tinney three goals and two assists to lead the way for Johns Hopkins. Ryan notched nine saves in the first start of his career and freshman Hunter Moreland won 7-of-12 faceoffs. Manley's four goals led the way for Penn State, which also got three goals from Sutton and one goal and three assists from Nick Aponte. Darcey was spectacular in goal with 13 saves, including four in the two overtime periods. Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, April 18 when the Blue Jays welcome Michigan to Homewood Field. A win against the Wolverines will secure a spot in the inaugural Big Ten Tournament for the Blue Jays. Notes: Brown is the first Johns Hopkins player with five or more goals in back-to-back games since Conor Ford turned the trick in 2004 Brown's five goals give him 41 on the year; he is the first Johns Hopkins player with back-to-back seasons of 40 goals since Dylan Schlott in 1998 & 1999 Stanwick's five assists give him 108 in his career, which moved him past Mickey Webster (105 / 1957-59) into fourth place on JHU's career assist list.
