VESTAL, N.Y.- Binghamton men's lacrosse beat UMass Lowell, 16-5, Saturday afternoon. BU tied the program record with 16 goals as it rolled to an America East win at a snowy Bearcats Sports Complex. Zach Scaduto tallied four goals, scoring consecutive goals on two separate occasions in the first half. Dan Mazurek won 15-22 faceoffs and claimed seven groundballs, sparking a Bearcat offense that shot 59 times-the most in Coach Scott Nelson's five-year tenure. Binghamton (3-6, 2-1 AE) scored seven times in the second quarter-its first seven-goal period since March 30, 2010. On that day, BU dropped seven on Lehigh in the first 15 minutes of play. On Saturday, Scaduto got the Bearcats off to a strong start in cold, snowy conditions. The senior scored 32 seconds in and then made it 2-0 with 13:08 remaining in the first. The River Hawks scored a few minutes later, but Thomas McAndrew found Liam Reaume for a goal and a 3-1 margin with 4:24 to go in the opening period. The hosts scored the first two goals of the second quarter as well, with Ben Kocis firing a laser into the back of the net and then Matthew Kaser posting a man-up goal for a 5-1 advantage with 10:38 to play in the half. After a pair of Lowell goals, T.J. Tiernan made a move and scored at the 6:08 mark to put BU ahead, 6-3. The goal ignited a 5-0 run to close the half and give Binghamton control of the match. Chris Bechle's check caused a turnover, leading to a transition chance that saw George Deignan score from Joe Licata. Less than a minute later, Johnny Maher scored, with McAndrew assisting. Scaduto then capped the half with two goals in the final minute, scoring unassisted with 51 seconds left and then finishing a Maher dish with eight seconds to go, putting BU up, 10-3, at the break. Binghamton outshot the River Hawks, 35-10, in the first thirty minutes. The visitors notched the first score of the second half, but the Bearcats rallied with four straight goals to all but clinch the decision. Kocis set up Deignan's second goal of the day with 12:02 remaining in the third. Licata found the back of the net in the final minute of the frame, giving the home team a 12-4 lead through three. McAndrew and Maher scored to begin the final period, expanding the difference to 10. After a UMass Lowell goal, Jake Nelson and Sean Gilroy closed scoring in the match. Gilroy's goal tied the program record of 16 goals. It marked the fifth time in school history that BU logged 16 goals. The Bearcats defeated UMBC, 16-10, on March 19. Scaduto continued his stellar senior campaign with four goals. Kocis and McAndrew each claimed a goal and two assists, while Maher contributed two goals and a helper. Deignan scored twice for the first time in his career and Licata and Reaume added a goal and an assist apiece. Sam Sanko made his first start in goal this season, making six saves. Eric Fischer provided a pair of late saves as well. Bechle recorded three caused turnovers for BU. As a team, Binghamton generated 59 shots, while the River Hawks shot 21 times. BU went 20-20 on clears and harassed Lowell into eight failed clears. It held a 43-17 advantage on groundballs. BU will play for the second time in four days on Tuesday, as Canisius visits campus. The non-league game is slated for a 7 p.m. faceoff at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
