CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Led by stellar performances by Jimmy Bitter and Kieran Burke, the second-ranked North Carolina mens lacrosse team built a 10-goal second half lead and eventually finished with a 15-10 win over 15th-ranked Harvard Tuesday night before 1,532 fans at Fetzer Field. Bitter tied his career highs for goals in a game with five and points in a game with seven as 10 different Tar Heels scored goals in the match. When Bitter scored with 9:44 left in the first quarter it marked the 50th successive game in which he has recorded a point. He has recorded at least one point in every game he has played in since March 16, 2012. The other Tar Heels who recorded points in 50 straight games were Dennis Goldstein (2/28/1989 to 5/27/1991) and Ryan Wade (5/11/91 to 5/21/94). Joey Sankey had a goal and three assists and has now recorded a point for UNC in 45 straight matches dating back to April 20, 2012. Kieran Burke improved his goalkeeper record to 4-0 for the Tar Heels by recording 21 saves. The 21 saves were the second most for Burke in a game in his career. He had a career-high 23 against Virginia on April 6, 2013. Burke made 10 saves Tuesday in the first half and 11 in the second half. With the win, Carolina improves to 9-0 on the season, its best start since winning its first 10 games in 2010. Harvard has lost back-to-back games and is now 4-3 on the season. The Crimson did not quit after falling behind 15-5 in the fourth quarter as it scored five successive goals in the final 8:04 to pull within 15-10 before the Tar Heels ran out the clock. Bitters five goals equal his career high of five against Air Force on March 8, 2013. His seven points in the game matched his career high set against Hofstra on April 14, 2012. Besides Bitters five and two effort, UNC got two goals from Chad Tutton, a goal and three assists from Joey Sankey, a goal and two assists from Luke Goldstock and a goal and an assist from both Jake Bailey and Steve Pontrello. Peyton Klawinski, Drew Hays, Patrick Kelly and Walker Chafee all scored single goals for UNC. The goal for Kelly came on his 21st birthday and Hays notched a goal for the first time since February 12, 2012 against Mercer in the second game of his freshman year. Bailey scored his fourth career goal and recorded his first career assist. The two points gave him his first career multi-point game. Harvard was led in scoring by Will Walker with three goals while Ian Ardrey, Deke Burns and Devin Dwyer each had a goal and two assists. The Crimson outshot the Tar Heels 48-44 on the evening, including 18-11 in the fourth quarter when Harvard outscored the Heels 5-3. North Carolina had a 40-39 edge in ground balls while Harvard won 14 face-offs to 13 for UNC. The teams combined for 35 turnovers, including 18 by UNC. Bryan Moore went the entire way in goal for Harvard, making 10 saves and allowing 15 goals. UNC sophomore Stephen Kelly won 12 of his 21 face-offs and led UNC with seven ground balls. Zach Powers had five ground balls for UNC and Evan Connell had four ground balls. Both defensemen caused two turnovers. Austin Williams won 14 of 26 face-offs for Harvard and Devin Dwyer and Jack Breit shared the lead for the Crimson in ground balls with six each. The Tar Heels came out of the gate fast, building a 6-0 lead 1:47 into the second quarter. Bitter was on fire early, recording five goals before the game was 17 minutes old. Sankey had two assists in that early run and Luke Goldstock added a goal and an assist. Harvards defense then settled down and after Patrick Kelly scored off Sankeys third assist of the game with 10:56 left before halftime, UNC did not score again in the opening half. UNC led 7-2 at the half. Chad Tutton scored two of the first three goals of the third quarter, staking the Tar Heels to a 9-3 lead with 9:10 left in the third quarter. After a goal by Harvards Brendan Newman, UNC scored six of the next seven goals, taking its biggest lead of the game at 15-5 with 9:09 to play. Steve Pontrellos goal was followed up by a goal by Jake Bailey off a clearing situation to build the lead to 11-4. After Dwyer scored for Harvard, Walker Chafee took a feed from Bailey on another fast break to make it 12-5 at the with 13 seconds left in the third quarter. Carolina notched the first three goals of the final period as Drew Hays scored from Jimmy Bitter, Joey Sankey scored from Michael Tagliaferri and Peyton Klawinski tallied off a Luke Goldstock assist on an EMO with 9:09 to play. Harvard then went on a 5-0 scoring run over a period of 7:08 with Will Walker scoring three goals during that run, the last with 1:59 to play.
