BOSTON - Sophomore Adam Schaal notched a hat trick and classmate Christian Carson-Banister made 15 saves, but the Boston University men's lacrosse team was edged by Harvard, 9-8, on Tuesday night at Nickerson Field. BU (6-5) and Harvard (6-5) played a back-and-forth contest that went down to the final possession. The Crimson scored with 2:05 remaining in regulation to break an 8-8 tie, but sophomore Sam Talkow won the ensuing faceoff. Harvard picked up a ground ball after a quick Terrier shot, but Talkow immediately forced a turnover and regained possession. After a couple wide shots and a timeout by each squad, sophomores Pat Myers and Cal Dearth each had looks in the waning seconds. Dearth's buzzer-beater bid was turned aside by Bryan Moore to seal the victory for Harvard. Schaal paced the Terrier attack with his third hat trick of the season. Freshman Ryan Hilburn also had three points thanks to a pair of goals and an assist. Talkow bounced back with a terrific performance at the faceoff X, winning 16-of-21 draws and scoring his ninth goal of the year. He also had six ground balls to lead the Terriers. Freshman Conor Okmin had his finest game as a Terrier, collecting a career-high four ground balls as a wing on faceoffs. Sophomore Greg Wozniak caused two turnovers and also gathered five ground balls in a strong defensive effort. Dearth had three ground balls, as did Hilburn. Sophomore Dominick Calisto recovered four loose balls and forced one turnover. Carson-Banister returned to the cage after missing the previous two games due to injury and had a terrific game between the pipes. He made 15 stops, including five in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Allen Winkoff recorded the first two assists of his collegiate career while freshman Jack Wilson tallied a goal and an assist for a two-point evening. Wilson was joined on the scoresheet by sophomores Greg Farris (1g) and Jack Beall (1a). Farris opened the scoring just 48 seconds into the proceedings with an unassisted marker. Schaal followed that with a goal thanks to a Wilson feed to give BU a 2-0 lead with 11:46 on the clock. The Crimson scored the final two goals of the quarter and added a third with 12:13 left in the second stanza to take a 3-2 lead. The Terriers scored twice in a 21-second span to regain their one-goal edge. Winkoff ran to the cage and found a wide-open Schaal in front of the cage to tie the game before Okmin helped Talkow make it 4-3. The freshman got a ground ball on the ensuing faceoff and quickly flipped it to Talkow, who then ran from midfield into the Harvard zone before unloading a shot into the top left corner. Following a pair of Crimson goals, Winkoff found Schaal again on a similar play to their first connection to even the score, 5-5, at the break. Both teams scored three goals in the third quarter, with the Crimson scoring the first two. Hilburn converted a tough-angle shot as the 30-second timer was ticking to begin a three-goal Terrier run. He then fed Wilson with 2:09 on the clock to tie the game, 7-7. Hilburn completed his three-point night with his 20th goal of the year thanks to a Beall feed with 28 seconds to go in the quarter. The Crimson responded with a goal of its own, however, with 10 seconds remaining to pull even with BU at 8-8. Neither team scored until late in the fourth quarter when Devin Dwyer tallied the game-winner. The teams combined for 16 shots in the final 15 minutes, with the Terriers taking seven of them. BU was excellent in the clearing game, going 12-of-13 on the evening. The Terriers also won 33 ground balls to just 23 for Harvard.
