WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's lacrosse team (0-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) outscored No. 16/14 Towson (2-1, 0-0 CAA) 5-1 in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome a lopsided first quarter, as they fell 9-6 in their home-opener at Multi-Sport Field on Sunday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Craig Berge (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had one goal and one assist and picked up four ground balls, to lead six different GU goal scorers. Graduate student Gabriel Mendola (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca[Harvard]) struggled in the first quarter, but won 10-of-11 face-offs after the first quarter to finish 12-of-18. The Tigers controlled possession early, winning five of the first seven face-offs and taking 14 shots to jump out to a 6-0 first quarter lead. Towson was aggressive picking up 11 ground balls to keep GU's few early possessions to one shot apiece. Georgetown trailed by seven after an early second quarter goal from Andrew Hodgson, who scored a game-high three goals for the Tigers. Berge finally put the Hoyas on the scoreboard with a goal at the 9:25 mark in the second quarter, but Towson's Joe Seider scored with 3:17 remaining in the half to send GU into the break trailing 8-1. The Hoyas opened the third quarter in strong fashion, as sophomore defender Charlie Ford (San Carlos, Calif./St. Ignatius) picked up the ground ball off the opening face-off and fed senior attack Bo Stafford (Greenwich, Conn./Brunswick) for a goal 13 seconds into the period. Spencer Parks put Towson back in front by seven goals, at 9-2 with 10:09 remaining in the third quarter, but it would be Towson's last goal of the game. Freshman Matt Behrens (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) picked up his own rebound off the post and scored an extra-man goal, his second in as many games, to put GU on the board less than a minute later. GU would continue to roll, as Mendola went seven-for-seven on face-offs in the second half to give the Hoyas offensive opportunities. Junior Corey Parke (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) scored an acrobatic goal at 5:57 in the third quarter to keep the Hoyas' offense rolling. Georgetown took advantage of another man-up opportunity, as freshman Stephen Quinzi (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) scored on the feed from senior attack Reilly O'Connor (Brooklin, Ontario/The Hill Academy) at the 9:24 mark in the fourth quarter. The Hoyas would finish two-of-four on extra-man opportunities on the day. Sophomore Devon Lewis (Orlando, Fla./Lake Highland Prep) scored on an assist from Berge with 5:44 left in the game, but it would be the last offense the Hoyas could manage, as three penalties had them playing man-down for 2:30 of the final five minutes. Freshman Nick Marrocco (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) took the loss after allowing nine goals and making five saves. Georgetown returns to action on Saturday, February 28 when they host another CAA opponent in Hofstra. The Hoyas and Pride are scheduled to face-off at noon on Multi-Sport Field. The game will be broadcast live on HoyaVision via the Georgetown University Athletics official website - www.GUHoyas.com.
