BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's lacrosse team scored the first three second-half goals to take a 9-7 lead, but No. 13/15 Loyola responded with a 4-0 run to surge ahead, on its way to an 11-10 win over the Mountain Hawks on a snowy Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Senior Alex Eaton pulled Lehigh back within one goal with 3:55 remaining, but his shot with 50 seconds on the clock was stopped by Greyhounds' goaltender Jacob Stover to end the Mountain Hawks' hopes. With the loss, Lehigh falls to 6-5 and 4-3 in Patriot League play while Loyola improves to 8-3 and 5-1 in the league. 4/9/2016 Men's Lacrosse vs. Loyola, 4/9/16 Men's Lacrosse vs. Loyola, 4/9/16 In a game of runs, the Mountain Hawks fell behind 6-3 early in the second quarter, but responded with six of the next seven goals to take a two-goal lead before the Greyhounds answered with a run of their own. "I thought it was a good battle, a back-and-forth affair," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "Loyola made just a couple more plays at the end of the game to secure it. I thought both teams battled really hard. We've got to beat them for this thing to turn into a rivalry, but it feels like it's a rivalry already." Senior Reid Weber tied a season high with four goals, while adding an assist, to lead the offense. Classmate Billy Oppenheimer added three points behind a goal and two assists while senior Ray Mastroianni scored two goals. Freshman Craig Chick had there groundballs, two caused turnovers and two faceoff wins to help spearhead the Lehigh defense while fellow freshman Eddie Bouhall was especially strong on the faceoff wing, recording five groundballs and a caused turnover. Freshman goaltender Chris Kiernan had four groundballs and a caused turnover. Loyola scored the first two goals, but Lehigh answered with two straight, from freshman Tristan Rai and Mastroianni to pull even with 5:47 left in the first quarter. The two-goal runs continued as the Greyhounds opened a 4-2 advantage following a man-down goal at 2:36 of the first quarter. The Greyhounds tacked onto their lead, adding two of the first three second-quarter goals to take a 6-3 advantage, but Lehigh answered with a 3-0 run, getting goals from Weber, junior Matt Raposo and Mastroianni to tie the score at six at the 17-second mark. However, Loyola scored as the first-half buzzer expired to take a 7-6 halftime advantage. The Mountain Hawks answered in the third quarter with three straight goals, the first two from Weber and the third from Oppenheimer, to take a 9-7 lead with 5:55 left in the stanza. From there, the Greyhounds would end the game on a 4-1 run, scoring four straight before Eaton netted his 13th goal of the season at 3:55 of the fourth quarter. Lehigh had two possessions to try and pull even, but one ended in a turnover while another ended with Stover making a save on an Eaton shot with less than one minute remaining. Final shots were 35-28 in favor of Lehigh while groundballs were tied at 30. The Greyhounds won 15-of-24 faceoffs on the afternoon. Stover made 14 saves for Loyola, seven coming in the first quarter, while Kiernan made 10 stops for the Mountain Hawks. "We've shown this entire year that if we play well, we can play with anybody and if we don't play well, we can get blown out by anybody," said Cassese. "We can take positives from that. Loyola is a great team and they're a great program. We had a one-goal lead in the fourth quarter and ended up losing a one-goal game. We battled hard. Hopefully it gives our guys some confidence as we move ahead to the next games, which are going to be just as tough." Lehigh now heads to Princeton on Tuesday to face the Tigers at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Cornell next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Goodman Stadium on Community Day and Senior Day.
