Staten Island, NY – Redshirt-junior attackman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) poured in a career-high six goals while sophomore attackman Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) added two goals and three assists to carry the Wagner men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 15-8 victory over Manhattan at ice-cold Hameline Field this afternoon. Following today's season-opening win, the Seahawks will take their 1-0 record on the road one week from today when they travel to Easton, PA to meet Lafayette on February 19 in a 4:00 p.m. start. The Jaspers, who compete in the MAAC, fall to 0-2 as they opened their season with a 16-3 loss to Wagner's fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) member Bryant. Wagner galloped out to an early 6-0 lead with McMenamin tallying two of these scores. Manhattan countered with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit in half, at 6-3, with the final goal in this run coming from Parker Giarratana with just 23 seconds left in the opening half The Seahawks took control once again with goals by Streilein and McMenamin to open the second half in opening an 8-3 lead. These tallies were part of a 5-1 run that was capped by McMenamin's fourth goal of the game, which came off of a Streilein assist, which gave the Seahawks an 11-4 lead with 3:08 left in the third quarter and Wagner was never headed form there. Senior midfielder Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and William McMenamin (Longport, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) each finished with two goals for the Seahawks. Sophomore midfielder Spencer Beyer (Carlsbad, Ca/Carlsbad) scored one goal, burying the Seahawks' first tally of the season five minutes into the game, while fellow sophomore middie JP Pawela (Montgomery Village, MD/St. John's College) added one goal as well. Freshman defenseman Connor Davis (Pottstown, PA/Bishop Shanahan) notched the final goal of the game, slamming home a shot with one second left in the game in fashioning the 15-8 final score. Freshman Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ/Morristown-Beard) held steady in his first collegiate game, coming up with six saves while going the distance between the pipes in recording his first career win. Giarratana paced Manhattan with five goals while Conor Darby added two scores. Michael Zingaro was busy in the net for the Jaspers in registering 11 saves. Wagner outshot Manhattan 44-22, led in ground balls by a 29-28 count, while the Jaspers won 14-of-25 faceoffs. NOTE: Today's Wagner-Manhattan contest was originally scheduled to be played tomorrow, Saturday February 13 at Noon, but was pushed up one day due to even more frigid conditions expected in the New York City metropolitan area overnight and through the weekend.
