QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John’s lacrosse team (1-10, 0-2 BIG EAST) fell, 11-7, in a defensive battle against Marquette (8-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at DaSilva Memorial Field on the St. John’s University Queens campus. The game, which featured downpour rain at times, saw several long runs of goals before the Golden Eagles ultimately prevailed. “We continue to have long stretches of really good undone by short stretches of not so good,” said Head Coach Jason Miller. “Marquette made a 4-0 run over the span of five minutes at the start of the third quarter. That was probably the difference today.” Marquette’s Andy Demichiei led the game with seven goals, breaking a program-record for most-goals in a single contest. Eric DeJohn led the scoring output for the Red Storm as the redshirt senior notched three points on two goals and one assist. Jason DeBenedictis was the other St. John’s student-athlete to put up multiple points, as the sophomore had one goal and one assist in the game. Despite losing the faceoff battle, 8-of-21, St. John’s peppered the Golden Eagles’ net with shots and outshot Marquette 37 to 26. In the second quarter, in which St. John’s scored twice, the Red Storm outshot Marquette 17-2. Both defensive units played physical throughout the contest and the game had a total of 10 penalties between the squads. Marquette went 2-of-6 in the extra-man opportunities and St. John’s was 1-of-3. DeJohn opened up the scoring attack for St. John’s as the Syracuse, N.Y., native scored the game’s first goal less than 20 seconds in. TJ Marron picked up a groundball off the opening faceoff and dumped down to DeJohn who went ‘five-hole’ on a bounce shot. Both teams got off to a quick start and combined for seven goals in the opening frame. Marquette went on a short three-goal run before Chris Hughes scored off a DeBenedictis assist with 8:54 left in the opening frame. This goal was the start of a five goal run for the Red Storm that lasted into the second period. DeJohn scored his second goal of the contest with 5:54 left in the first quarter after picking up a groundball off a Hughes rebound shot that hit post. At the time DeJohn’s doorstep goal gave St. John’s a 4-3 lead. The final five minutes of the first quarter were fairly deadlocked including a 30 second penalty kill by St. John’s at around the 2:00 mark. With 11:42 left in the second quarter, DeBenedictis scored an impressive goal off the second-career assist by Kyle Skramko. In the defensive end of the field Skramko caused a turnover by Marquette’s Ryan McNamara. The junior defenseman picked up the ground ball and proceeded to run the length of the field before dishing a nifty behind-the-back assist to DeBenedictis who went high on the goalie. This goal gave St. John’s its largest lead of the contest at 6-3. The turning point of the game came at the start of the second half in which Marquette’s Demichiei scored three goals in a span of less than two minutes. His last goal of this natural hat trick came at 11:13 in the third. Ryan McNamara, Marquette’s leading scorer on the year, added a man-up goal at 10:04 and effectively pushed momentum in the Golden Eagles’ favor with an 8-6 lead. Marquette added two more as part of a larger seven goal run and led 10-6 with 10:49 in the final frame. Both teams would add one more goal a piece before the final whistle. Coach Miller used two goalies in today’s contest with Joseph Danaher to start. Danaher saved 4-of-8 in the first half and redshirt freshman Michael O’Keeffe saved 3-of-10 in the final 30:00 of play. St. John’s travels to Denver next weekend to take on the Pioneers in the Red Storm’s final road trip in 2016. Coach Miller and his squad are set for a 3 p.m. (ET) first faceoff.
