SYRACUSE, N.Y. No. 4 Syracuse (1-0) opened the 2015 campaign with a dominating 21-7 victory against Siena (0-1) in the season opener for both teams Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Carrier Dome. Thirteen different players scored goals for Syracuse to lead the Orange to its 16th season-opening win in John Desko's 17 years as head coach. Senior Kevin Rice paced the Orange with six points, including four assists. SU also received big days from redshirt senior Hakeem Lecky who had a career-high five points, including a personal-best four assists, and redshirt junior Dylan Donahue who finished with a game-high four goals. "Anytime you win a game, it's good," Desko said. "Our guys were happy to be back in the Carrier Dome and excited to play. Offensively, we were pretty successful obviously, putting points up on the board. The guy next to me (Ben Williams) did a terrific job in the middle of the field, not only coming up with the ball but making good decisions after he did." Williams, playing in his first game for Syracuse after transferring from Holy Cross, won 17-of-20 (.850) draws and picked up 11 ground balls. Overall, he powered the Orange to a 25-5 advantage at the faceoff X. He also scored a goal in the opening quarter. The wealth of possessions Williams generated helped Syracuse get out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter and a 9-3 halftime advantage. In the third quarter, the Orange continued to pour it on. Syracuse netted the first four goals of the second half, including a man-up tally by Donahue at the 11:21 mark of third to extend the lead to 13-3. The Saints cut the deficit to nine on three occasions after that, the last time on a goal by Jon-Michael Tokar with one second left in the third quarter that made it 15-6. However, the Saints never got any closer as the Orange outscored the visitors 6-1 in the fourth quarter. Richie Hurley led Siena with five points (2 goals, 3 assists) in the contest. Freshman Chris Robertson had a hat trick for the Saints is his college debut. Senior goalie Bobby Wardwell started for the Orange and tallied five saves in 36:40. He was replaced by junior Warren Hill midway through the third quarter. Hill made three saves in his SU debut. Syracuse held a 50-23 advantage in shots for the game and collected 43 ground balls to 20 for the Saints. The Orange returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 15 when its hosts Cornell inside the Carrier Dome. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel. Game Notes: The victory was the 199th of Desko's career. Desko is 199-63 (.760) since becoming head coach in 1999 Redshirt senior Nicky Galasso scored three goals, his first hat trick since joining the Orange prior to the 2013 season Redshirt freshmen Ryan Simmons and J.T. Forkin had two goals apiece in their Orange debut Senior Mike Messina picked up a career-high eight ground balls, mostly as a wing on the faceoff Syracuse's 21 goals were its most since it tallied 22 in the 2009 season opener versus Providence The Orange extended its winning streak to 21 straight games when allowing fewer than 10 goals.
