SYRACUSE, N.Y. No. 1 Syracuse (7-0, 2-0 ACC) used a high-powered offense and stifling defense to cruise to a 19-7 victory against No. 4 Duke (7-2, 0-1 ACC) in front of a season-high crowd of 11,408 Sunday, March 22 at the Carrier Dome. Attackmen Kevin Rice and Dylan Donahue each finished with seven points. Rice tallied four goals and three assists, while Donahue bagged a game-high five goals and contributed a pair of helpers. Midfielder Henry Schoonmaker chipped in with three goals to help Syracuse remain undefeated. As well as the Orange offense played, the Syracuse defense was even more impressive. The Orange held a Duke attack that entered the game third nationally in scoring offense (16.0 goals per game) to one goal in the first half and two through the first three quarters. Senior goalie Bobby Wardwell led the charge, making 11 saves in 48 minutes. Close defenseman Brandon Mullins picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. Mullins limited Duke leading goal-scorer Justin Guterding to two goals, one of which was man-up. The duo of Peter Macartney and Scott Firman shut down Duke star midfielder Myles Jones. Jones took eight shots and did not score a goal for the first time this season. Jones finished with just one assist, well below his season average of 5.63 points per contest. "I was really happy with the performance of our team and I thought our assistant coaches did a really great job of getting our offense and our defense ready for what they were going to see today, SU head coach John Desko said. "I think we just played well from one end of the field to the other." Syracuse never let the Blue Devils in the game. After Duke won the opening faceoff and turned the ball over, the Orange rattled off four straight goals before the Blue Devils had another possession. Schoonmaker fueled the Orange early, scoring all three of his goals in the opening quarter to help stake Syracuse to 6-1 advantage after the first 15 minutes. Tim Barber and Ben Williams found the cage seven seconds apart in the first minute of the second quarter, and six different players combined for seven goals in the period, as the hosts stretched the lead to 13-1 at halftime. In the third quarter, a Guterding goal broke a Duke scoring drought of 25:03 at the 6:26 mark, but the Orange outscored Duke 3-1 in the period to claim a 16-2 advantage. Duke tallied the first three goals of the fourth quarter to close the gap to 16-5 before another three-goal Syracuse run resulted in a 19-5 lead. Deemer Class and Tanner Scott each had goals for the Blue Devils in the last three minutes of the game to close the scoring. Syracuse enjoyed a 44-35 advantage in shots, including a 23-4 margin in the first quarter. Syracuse also held the edge in faceoffs, 17-12. Williams won 13-of-16 (.813) draws in the first half and finished the game 14-for-22 (.636) with 11 ground balls. Wardwell was replaced in goal with eight minutes left by junior Warren Hill who finished with three saves. Guterding's two goals led the Blue Devils. Class also had two points on one goal and one assist. Luke Aaron played the first three quarters in goal for Duke. He tallied four saves and allowed 16 goals. Syracuse returns to action on Saturday, March 28 when it visits Notre Dame for another ACC showdown. Faceoff between the Orange and Fighting Irish is slated for 12 p.m. at Arlotta Stadium. The game will be televised live on ESPNU. Game Notes: Following losses on Saturday by Marquette and North Carolina, Syracuse is the only remaining unbeaten team in Division I lacrosse Barber made his first career start on attack in place of Randy Staats who missed the game with a lower-body injury Sunday's attendance of 11,408 marked the ninth-largest crowd to witness a regular-season game at the Carrier Dome, and the most fans for a Syracuse men's lacrosse game since March 4, 2011 versus Virginia (14,340) The 12-goal loss was the worst for the Blue Devils since they suffered a 13-goal setback (19-6) at Johns Hopkins in 2003. That game also marked the last time Duke gave up more than 18 goals in a game Syracuse redshirt freshman Matt Lane scored his first career goal in the fourth quarter.
