ANNAPOLIS, Md. Senior Kyle Bernlohr made 12 saves and allowed just one goal in a sensational goalkeeping debut to lead the No. 10 Maryland mens lacrosse team to an 8-1 victory over Navy in its season-opener Saturday afternoon at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. Battling snow flurries for much of the first half, the Terrapin close defensive corps of Matt Dunn, Casey Ikeda and Mac Pons did not allow a goal until 6:54 remaining in the third quarter. Maryland (1-0) had opened a commanding 4-0 lead to that point and never looked back. Junior Henry West and sophomore Matt Rambo each tallied a pair of goals and an assist to lead Maryland offensively, while Joe LoCascio added two goals, as well. LoCascio scored the first goal of the season for the Terrapins less than 2:30 into the game, firing a shot past goalkeeper John Connors to give Maryland a lead it would never yield. West rounded out the scoring in the first half, twice beating his defender to give the Terps a 3-0 halftime lead. Maryland took advantage of an extra-man opportunity after the halftime break, as Rambo received a feed from Bryan Cole and beat Connors for the goal. After allowing Navy its first goal of the game midway through the third quarter, Maryland buckled down for four unanswered goals, including strikes from Colin Heacock and Jay Carlson, to close out the game. Maryland outshot the Midshipmen, 34-27, and was a perfect 25-for-25 on clear attempts.
