CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse program faltered at No. 6 nationally ranked North Carolina in a 20-8 game on Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Saturday afternoon. Nick Mariano led the Minutemen with his seventh career hat trick, earned on three goals. Peter Lindley added three points through a pair of goals and an assist. Buddy Carr, Ryan Izzo and Dan Muller also scored for UMass, while Muller added one assist. Gianni Bianchin and Grant Consoletti helped out on two tallies apiece. Joey Sankey and Jimmy Bitter were the leaders on attack for North Carolina. Sankey recorded seven points via four goals and three assists. Bitter split his six points evenly through three scores and as many helpers. Mariano tied with freshman faceoff specialist Noah Rak for the team lead in groundballs as each Minuteman picked up four. Rak won 12 of the 20 faceoffs he took. North Carolina put a goal on the scoreboard first with nine minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter, but Consoletti and Carr teamed to even things up at the 8:04 mark. The Tar Heels responded with back-to-back scores before Muller ended the streak with a hard shot 15 yards out from the left post on a feed from Bianchin, but North Carolina replied on the other end for a 4-2 lead at the end of one quarter.
