Stony Brook, N.Y. - The No. 20 Stony Brook men's lacrosse team lost to No. 6 Duke, 17-11, before a crowd of 4,860 Wednesday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Senior Mike Rooney (East Islip, N.Y.) registered his second straight hat trick and added two assists. His third goal of the game, his 36th of the season, gave him 82 points this season, tying John Warrack for the most in school history. Junior Brody Eastwood (Victoria, British Columbia) finished with two goals and an assist. His first goal of the game was his 52nd of the season, setting a new school record for goals in a season. Junior Challen Rogers (Coquitlam, British Columbia) tallied two goals and two assists. Stony Brook (10-4) also received a goal and an assist from sophomore Alex Corpolongo (Purdys, N.Y.). Jack Bruckner had five goals and an assist for Duke (9-4). Case Matheis added three goals and three assists. Quotes . . . "I was really proud of our fight tonight. I think tonight's game was good for us on a number of different levels. Duke's speed and athleticism really made us raise our level of play tonight. The type of experience our guys got in this game will be important for us as the conference tournament approaches. Key Moments The first half of the game was dictated by runs. After freshman McLean Chicquen's (Victoria, British Columbia) goal made it 3-2 Seawolves, Duke scored eight straight, taking a 10-3 lead with 7:51 left in the second quarter. Stony Brook answered with two EMO goals and five total as it trailed 10-8 at halftime. Corpolongo made it 11-9 Duke with 11:05 left in the third quarter, but the Blue Devils outscored the Seawolves, 6-2, the rest of the way. By The Numbers Both teams were strong on the clear. Duke was 18 of 18 and Stony Brook was 14 of 15. The Seawolves scored two EMO goals, bringing their season total to 26. Duke was 23 of the 32 face-offs. Freshman Ben Randall (Mason, Ohio) recorded a career-high three caused turnovers. Stony Brook scored at least 10 goals for the 12th straight game. Sophomore Hayden Johnstone (Toronto, Ontario) finished with seven saves. News & Notes Rooney is nine points away from breaking Kevin Crowley's '11 school record of 232 career points. Eastwood moved into a tie for 10th place all-time with 144 career points. Rooney is four assists away from breaking Jason Cappadoro's '06 record of 107. Eastwood's 58 points rank eighth all-time in a season in Stony Brook history.
