COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its first game in Ohio Stadium of the season, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team defeated UMBC, 12-7, Friday, with ESPNU televising the contest. The Buckeyes held the Retrievers scoreless for a 26:17 stretch from early in the second quarter until 13:24 of the fourth quarter and used a six-goal run to take control of the game. Ohio State, now 3-1, will host the Midwest Lacrosse Classic next weekend in Ohio Stadium. Detroit and Bellarmine will meet at 3 p.m. Friday, with the Buckeyes facing Marquette at 6 p.m. Sunday (March 6), the Titans and Golden Eagles will face off at noon, with Ohio State taking on Bellarmine at 3 p.m. Against UMBC, Buckeye sophomore Colin Chell led the way with three goals (the Buckeyes’ first three of the day) and tied Austin Shanks, who had two goals and two assists, for the Buckeyes’ point lead with four each. Junior Jake Withers won 14 faceoffs and had a team-best 10 groundballs in the win. The teams were tied three times before the Buckeyes’ six-goal run. The squads traded early goals, as the Retrievers tallied at 13:40 to open the scoring before Chell notched his first of the day at 11:43. UMBC again went ahead when Jack Gannon scored at 5:24, but Chell scored at 3:44 for a 2-2 game. The Buckeyes took their first lead of the game 51 seconds into the second quarter when Chell scored, set up by Shanks. UMBC answered to tie the game at 10:11 on a Pat Clipp goal. The Scarlet and Gray then scored six in a row to pull away. Junior John Kelly put Ohio State ahead 4-3 at 8:21 of the second, with an assist from Shanks. Chell found senior Carter Brown for a goal at 6:09 and senior Ryan Hunter scored at 2:06, off a turnover right in front of the cage, to put the Buckeyes up by three heading into halftime (6-3). Ohio State scored the only three goals of the third quarter to extend the lead to 9-3. Freshman Jack Jasinski notched his second career goal at 10:57 and Shanks followed with a goal of his own just over a minute later (9:46). Brown found junior Eric Fannell at 6:59 for a man-up goal. UMBC ended its scoreless streak at 13:24 of the fourth quarter when Pat Brennan tallied. The teams traded goals the rest of the way, with junior JT Blubaugh scoring for Ohio State at 12:23, starting close defenseman Chris Mahoney notching a goal for a third game in a row at 11:10 and Shanks scoring at 3:52. Ohio State outshot UMBC, 41-16, in the game. The Buckeyes allowed four shots in the first quarter and just two in both the second and third periods. UMBC had eight shots in the fourth quarter. Ohio State had 12 shots in both the first and second quarters, with 11 in the third and six in the fourth. Buckeye goalie Tom Carey had six saves, with UMBC’s Connor Gordon stopping eight shots. Ohio State won 14-of-23 faceoffs in the game. Junior Jake Withers was 14-8 for the Buckeyes, his third game this season with 14 faceoff wins. He had a game-high and season-best 10 groundballs vs. the Retrievers. Withers has won 54-of-82 faceoffs (.659) this season and has a team-best 35 groundballs. The Buckeyes caused nine turnovers, led by freshman Matt Borges and senior Kacy Kapinos with two each. Ohio State won the groundball battle, 27-20. Chell led the Buckeyes with three goals, his fourth career hat trick, adding an assist for his first career four-point game. Shanks had a Buckeye career high four points and two goals. Blubaugh (6g, 2a), Chell (6g, 2a), Kelly (5g, 3a) and Shanks (3g, 5a) lead the Buckeyes with eight points each on the year. Fannell, Blubaugh and Chell are tied for first with six goals and Shanks has a team-best five assists. Brown had his third two-point game of the season and extended his goal and point streak to 13.
