Staten Island, NY – Hat tricks from fifth-year senior midfielder Paul DeVita (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) and junior midfielder Joe Lomeli (Clark, NJ / A.L. Johnson / NJIT), two goals from freshman attackman Nic Ancona (Warrenton, VA / Paul VI), and 13 saves from sophomore goalie Matt Sefcik (Towaco, NJ / Morristown Beard) led the Wagner men's lacrosse team to an 11-8 wire-to-wire win today over VMI.
In winning their second straight, on the heels of Saturday's thrilling 7-6 double-overtime win over Dartmouth, the Seahawks even their record at 3-3 while the Keydets fell to 1-3.
The Seahawks opened the game with a 3-0 run on goals by DeVita (unassisted), Ancona, assisted by junior attackman Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape), followed by another unassisted score by sophomore midfielder Spencer Kaufman (Merrick, NY / Sanford H. Calhoun). VMI responded with goals from Kyle Walsh and Chris Spada to make it a 3-2 game.
Wagner then closed the half on a 3-1 run on DeVita and Ancona's second goals, along with Lomeli's first of the game. The Green & White then put the game out of reach on a 3-0 spurt to open the second half, two from Lomeli, to build the lead to 8-3 late in the third quarter and never looked back.
Statistically, Wagner held the edge, outshooting VMI 42-31 while winning the groundball battle, 34-28. Faceoffs were split right down the middle with each team going 11-of-22 in the X. Junior midfielder Nick Warren (Granby, CT / Granby Memorial / Mount St. Mary's) was the Seahawks' top faceoff man on the afternoon, winning 6-of-9, to go with four groundballs.
Wagner will look to make it a three-game winning streak on Friday, March 10 when the Seahawks host Hampton. Faceoff between the Seahawks and the Pirates at Hameline Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
