| | They were runners up in 1987 and 1988. However, there are a few reasons why they haven't won another title since then:
1. Overall parity in the game of lacrosse came about.
2. Syracuse started dominating recruiting and lacrosse hype in Upstate New York, partly because academics were easier and they played a more exciting, uptempo style of game.
3.Willie Scroggs took over North Carolina's program. Willie was one of the best coaches and recruiters ever and built an awesome program. This introduced the South as a great place to go play lacrosse. Not only are the campuses and girls beautiful, but the winters are less ugly and the schools are away from home for most of the great players. Virginia started getting more talent and has been getting great talent ever since. Before long, Duke started getting great players. More now than ever, the majority of LACROSSE PLAYERS WANT TO GO SOUTH. That is what is what is so impressive about Cornell's dominance this season.
3. In the 70's, Richie Moran, Cornell's coach, was an awesome lacrosse coach. In fact, I think that Richie Moran in the 70's was 1 of the 5 best lacrosse coaches ever. However, as the 80's started rolling, he got a little bit older and time starting to pass by him. He had a few good years, but Cornell still wasn't the same as it was in the 70's. In the 90's, time had completely past by Moran. He retired in 1997. There is no doubt that Richie was a great coach, but he stayed a little bit too long, IMHO.
Yes, Dom Starsia and UVA have won 3 national titles and have been runner's up 2 other teams since the last time Cornell even made the title game. However, does that mean that Dom Starsia is a better coach than Jeff Tambroni and does that proove more than what Cornell is currently doing.?Absolutely not! Take nothing away from what UVA has done. They have had a great run and gotten some great players. However, as I have said before, in this day and age, UVA is such a simple sell for talent that their biggest challenge is NOT TO DOMINATE. And yes, they will be back very soon. In fact, throughout the next 10 years, they might well win more national titles than Cornell. Kip Turner is graduating, but he will be replaced by a goalie who is coming out of high school right now and who is considered to be 1 of the best goalies However, that doesn't make their accomplishments any more impressive than Cornell's accomplishments. In a way, Cornell does a lot with much less, which is so special.
