This match-up of top five teams was everything that fans had hoped for as the Duke Blue Devils (7-1), who led the entire game, handed Georgetown (5-1) their first loss of the season. Despite the four goal effort of Hoya All-American Wick Stanwick and the hat-trick from sophomore standout Lauryn Bernier, Duke never failed to respond to Georgetown's challenges, in route to taking their fifth straight win. Duke was led by the efforts of freshman net minder Megan Huether and the offensive power of attacker Katie Chrest. The scoring started just over a minute and a half into the action when Chrest scored the first of her four goal performance. Georgetown controlled the ensuing draw, but Huether wouldn’t allow any goals to fall, keeping her team in the lead for the crucial first minutes of play, while keeping momentum out of the hands of Georgetown. Duke, after regaining possession on one of Huether’s saves, brought the ball downfield and after setting up their offense, Lauren Gallagher found Kate Kaiser cutting across the middle for Duke’s second score. As was the case throughout the game, Georgetown continued to fight back and Bernier, after making a great defensive play brought the ball downfield, outpacing the Duke defense. On a textbook give and go, she scored her first, bringing the game back to within one. With 17:19 on the clock, Caline McHenry scored on a free position for the Blue Devils. Georgetown, trying to avoid a deeper deficit, called a timeout to slow the momentum of the game. It was to no avail as Chrest drove lefty in the next possession and had her second tally. Hoya captain Wick Stanwick, who continues to fill the shoes her older sister Sheehan (’01), was visibly energized as she took the ball from X to the 5x5 and scored her first of the day to cut her team’s deficit to two. Not to be outdone, three-and-a-half minutes later, Chrest placed the ball in the lower right-hand corner of the net to again extend the lead. The battle continued when Georgetown sophomore Sarah Oliphant came off the bench and scored on a dodge from behind that seemed to mirror teammate Stanwick’s drive from behind only minutes earlier. Oliphant’s goal was her first goal of the game and fifth of the season. Although Duke won the draw that followed, Georgetown’s defense was able to get the ball back in the hands of its offense. Liz Ryan who had played a strong but quiet twenty minutes drove through the middle of the Duke defense and again brought the game to within one. Fortunately for Duke, that was the closest that Georgetown would come for the rest of the contest. On a clear that was broken up by the strong pressure of the Duke attackers, Katie Laschinger took the groundball to the net on a two on one and after drawing pressure dished the ball to Jessica Bennett for her first score. Again, with 4:15 showing on the clock, Duke broke-up a Georgetown clear and Laschinger and Bennett connected again, but this time Laschinger had the goal and Bennett the assist. The Hoyas regained possession with approximately a minute and a half left, but when a final scoring opportunity failed, Duke quickly took the ball down the field and scored with 0:04 remaining on the clock. This final blow of the half came from Bennett off an assist from Gallagher and ended the half with the scoreboard registering an 8-4 lead for Duke. It appeared as though the second half might be a different story as Georgetown’s Liz Ryan fed Anouk Peters for the first goal of the half, only 0:19 into play. But those thoughts quickly dissipated as Chrest and Gallagher scored with 27:56 and 21:35 remaining, respectively. Judging by the effort put forth, it appeared as though Lauryn Bernier had seen enough of Duke’s scoring and decided to shoulder an offensive role beyond her regular defensive duties. With 19:07 on the clock she scored her second of the day, but she wasn’t finished. Bernier, an obvious fan favorite judging by the crowd’s reaction to her play, took a sharp pass from Stanwick to finish her hat-trick. Bernier said after the game “I was inspired by Keri McBride’s singing of the National Anthem and while I know we all had lots to think about this week we just tried to focus on the task at hand.” Liz Ryan followed Bernier’s lead and netted her second to continue to build momentum while cutting the Duke lead to two. But that momentum was suppressed as Kristy Dirks scored two in a row and opened the lead again. At the ten minute mark Stanwick fired her team up with a goal that came off a feed from Allison Chambers and although Duke’s Gallagher responded with a goal Stanwick continued the fight. In the next five minutes of play Stanwick scored her third and fourth goals of the game, but her efforts proved too late. Duke netted the final goal with 2:57 left in the game while Georgetown was in a shut-off defense and sealed the victory. Final score: Duke 14, Georgetown 11. | | |
