Bitter and Sankey Lead Tar Heels in Upset Over Top Ranked Maryland:

A hat trick from both Jimmy Bitter and Joey Sankey combined with 15 saves from goalie Kieran Burke gave the 12th ranked Tar Heels the win over the nations number one team in Maryland by a score of 10-8. It was the fourth straight year in which the Tar Heels have defeated the Terps in the regular season. The win moves North Carolina to 5-3 on the season while the loss, the Terps first of the year, drops Maryland to 6-1. The loss also ensures that no team in Division One will go undefeated in 2013. North Carolina jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third quarter thanks to a six goal run, the eighth goal giving Sankey his third hat trick of the season. It was then Burkes time to shine, as the freshman goaltender and the Tar Heels defense weathered a Maryland rally to secure the 10-8 win. Bitter led all players with five points in the game. Owen Blye, Kevin Cooper, and Jake Bernhardt each scored twice for Maryland. The Tar Heels will look for its third win in a row next week when they will host the Brown Bears, while the Terps will look to get back on the winning path when they face ACC rival Virginia.

Syracuse win streak snapped by Villanova

After winning five straight games, the Syracuse Orange lost for the first time in almost a months time on Saturday, when they were defeated by Big East rival Villanova, 11-10. Led by a record breaking performance by junior Thomas Croonquist, who won a remarkable 22-of-24 face-offs during the game, theWildcats improved to 2-5 on the season. Syracuse drops to 5-2 on the season and 2-1 in Big East play. Finding themselves on the wrong end of a 10-9 score with less than three minutes to play, the Wildcats evened the score when senior Jack Rice beat Syracuse goaltender Dominic Lamolinara to tie it at ten. Villanova would take the lead for good just seven seconds later, when Croonquist won the face-off, sprinted down field and set up Tim Mulrenan for the game winner. Villanova's John Kluh led all players with three goals during the game while four Orange players scored two goals apiece. The Wildcats will next host Penn State while Syracuse will travel to Princeton to face the eleventh ranked Tigers.

Hopkins Bounces Back With Win Over Virginia

After a tough loss to long time rival Syracuse last week, Johns Hopkins found themselves facing a second long time rival in the Virginia Cavaliers. The outcome would be different for the Blue Jays this time, as Hopkins used nine goal run that stretched from first to third quarter to cruise to a 15-8 win over the fourteenth ranked Cavaliers. Wells Stanwick, Ryan Brown, and Rex Sanders all scored three times for the Blue Jays while the Cavaliers Matt Cockerton led all players with four goals. Stanwick also added an assist to stretch his streak of four point games to four. Hopkins will next travel to UNC for a matchup with the Tar Heels while Virginia will look to snap its three game losing streak against ACC rival Maryland.

Lax.com Player of the Week: Kieran McArdle, junior attack from St. John's. McArdle recorded a ridiculous 13 points in the Red Storms 17-11 win over Robert Morris. The six goal, seven assist performance broke the St. John's record for points in a game, which McArdle set in 2012 with a 12 point game against Rutgers.

Lax.com Clutch Performance(s) of the Week: Tim Mulrenan, freshman attack from Villanova and Ben Mcintosh, junior attack from Drexel. Mulrenan scored the game winning goal to give Villanova a 10-9 upset win over Syracuse while Mcintosh buried the game winner for Drexel a minute into triple overtime during the Dragons 8-7 win over Hofstra.
