PHILADELPHIA -- Sophomore Andy Hipple scored all three of his goals and dished out an assist in the second quarter as the University of Delaware jumped out to a 12-1 lead and held off a late Saint Joseph's charge to post a 16-9 non-league men's lacrosse victory in the season opener for both teams Saturday at the University of Pennsylvania's Franklin Field.

Hipple was one of 10 Delaware players to score a goal as the Blue Hens (1-0) won their season opener for the first time since 1999 and downed the Hawks (0-1) for the third time without a loss. The game was switched to Franklin Field from Delaware's Rullo Stadium after last week's snow made the Hens' field unplayable. The game was played with temperatures near 10 degrees.

Senior Matt Alrich added three goals and two assists, pre-season All-American Ryan Metzbower added two goals and one assist, Bob Meunier scored twice, and freshman Xander Ritz added a goal and three assists in his collegiate debut to lead the Hens. The Hens are coming off a 3-11 season a year ago.

Saint Joseph's, which went 4-10 last season, fell behind 12-1 early in the third quarter and could never catch up despite outscoring the Hens 8-4 over the game's final 27 minutes. Alex Heidenberger led the Hawks with three goals while Keegan Wilkinson dished out seven assists.

Delaware sophomore goalkeeper Chris Collins posted the win and had 12 saves in his first career start as the Hens outshot Saint Joseph's 44-34. Hawks backup goalkeeper Dan Morrissey entered the game early in the third quarter and was outstanding, posting nine saves and allowing just four goals.

Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first eight minutes of the game before Saint Joseph's got on the board on a goal by Brian Ponne with 2:43 left in the opening quarter. But the Hens then exploded by scoring two goals in the final two minutes of the first quarter and outscored Saint Joseph's 6-0 in the second quarter to take a 10-1 lead at halftime. The Hens then scored two goals in the first two minutes of the third quarter to go up 12-1.

Saint Joseph's rallied behind the passing of Wilkinson, scoring the final five goals of the third quarter to pull to within 12-6. But Delaware stopped the run in the final quarter as Ritz fed Alrich and Anthony Benazzi for goals to up the lead to Blue Hens lead to 14-6.
