HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- The 10th-ranked Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team established a 4-1 halftime
advantage and held on for an 8-5 win over third-ranked Hampden-Sydney in the first round of the ODAC Tournament on
Tuesday in Hampden-Sydney, Va.
In a nip-and-tuck first period, Hampden-Sydney opened the scoring on attackman Chris Lucas' goal 3:47 into the contest.
W&L senior midfielder Tommy Melanson (Baltimore, Md./Loyola) then tied it up with 10:00 left in the first, and neither team
was able to score for the rest of the quarter.
The Generals (9-3) took a lead they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game at 9:14 of the second period when junior
midfielder Mike McNamara's (Hunt Valley, Md./Loyola) shot found the back of the Tigers' net. Successive goals by junior
midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius), sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport,
N.Y./Northport) and sophomore midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) put W&L on top 5-1 with 10:47 left
to play in the third period.
After Hampden-Sydney midfielder Phil Dick scored two straight goals to make it 5-3 with 6:46 left in the third, W&L
outscored the Tigers 3-2 the rest of the way behind goals by Melanson, McNamara and Martin.
The Generals, who held advantages of 28-21 in shots and 37-34 in ground balls, were led by Martin, McNamara and
Melanson, who finished with two goals apiece. In net, junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) turned back
seven H-SC offerings.
Lucas and Dick paced the Tigers with three and two goals, respectively. Jeremy Bull made 11 saves in goal.
The Generals will try to win their second ODAC title in as many seasons on Saturday when they square off with Lynchburg at
Lynchburg. A game time has not yet been established.
