Late Rally for Rutgers Falls Short Against St. John's at Big City Classic

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (April 3, 2011) –The Rutgers men’s lacrosse team (5-4, 0-2 BIG EAST) dropped a hard fought matchup to BIG EAST rival St. John’s (3-6, 1-1 BIG EAST), 9-8, this afternoon at the Big City Classic at the New Meadowlands Stadium. Leading the way for RU were Scott Klimchak (Clark, N.J.) and Mike Diehl (Flemington, N.J.).

Rutgers got off to a fast start scoring less than 10 seconds into the game when Chris Mattes (Westfield, N.J.) took the opening faceoff and found Klimchak who rifled the shot past the St. John’s keeper. The lead was short-lived as the Red Storm answered six seconds later to even the game. St. John’s found the back of the net again a minute and six seconds later to take its first lead at 2-1.

After the Red Storm added another goal to push their lead to 3-1, the Scarlet Knights responded when Diehl made a fancy move to beat his defender and then snuck a hard shot inside the upper right corner of the cage to cut the St. John’s lead to 3-2. The Johnnies were able to add another goal with 1:42 left on the clock to take a 4-2 lead into the second period.

Rutgers struck first in the second when Kory Kelly (Princeton, N.J.) fired a laser into the back of the cage at the 12:53 mark to get RU within a goal. St. John’s again responded quickly to regain a two goal lead but Rutgers would not give in as Diehl netted his second of the game to keep the Scarlet Knights within one. After St. John’s added another goal RU responded 1:28 before the half when Klimchak scored on a beautiful diving goal to send the teams to the locker room with St. John’s in front 6-5.

The Scarlet Knights drew first blood in the second half as Diehl completed his hat trick scoring a nifty goal on a man-up opportunity to even the game, 6-6. The Red Storm did not let the Diehl goal affect their confidence as they were able to run off the next three goals and push their lead to 9-6 late into the fourth.

Rutgers kept fighting until the end and got to within a goal behind goals from Scott and Matt Klimchak (Clark, N.J.). Scott Klimchak took a feed from Duncan Clancy (Flemington, N.J.) and fired it past the St. John’s keeper with 6:30 left in the frame to cut the lead to two. After a pair of key defensive stands, Matt Klimchak netted his first of the game on a man-up goal assisted again by Clancy to cut the lead in half with 46 seconds to go.

After Mattes secured another key face-off win, RU had the ball in the St. John’s zone and called timeout to set up a play. The Scarlet Knights moved the ball around the perimeter but a pass eventually got away from RU and the Red Storm were able to run out the clock to secure the 9-8 victory.

The Scarlet Knights return to action next weekend when they travel to N.Y. for a 1 p.m. matchup at Marist.
