The Cornell Big Red pushed their winning streak to nine with a convincing 12-6 win over Ivy League counterpart Dartmouth at Schoellkopf field on Saturday. Only few were on hand to witness Cornell's victory because the weather kept most away. Not once did the rain relent which made for less than ideal playing conditions. Cornell should be used to it though because it was at home in the rain where they upstaged #1 ranked Syracuse a week before. Freshman Sean Greenhalgh continued to pace the way for Cornell with an impressive five goals on the day. Last week he pumped in six in their win over Syracuse. He now has 32 goals on the season and has already eclipsed the single season scoring record for freshman at Cornell.
As the game got underway it was clear that the rain was making things very sloppy. Neither team could get into any sort of offensive rhythm. Midfielder Ben Grinnell finally got things started for Dartmouth with 6:31 left in the first quarter of action with a hard shot from out front that just got by All-American goalie Justin Cynar. With the clock almost expired, Dartmouth scored again on an extra man opportunity. This time it was Casey Burlage finding the back of the net with another hard shot from up top. The clock expired and it was Dartmouth leading 2-0 going into the second quarter. Entering the second quarter, the momentum seemed to change and Cornell looked alot more confident. Justin Redd got things going for the Big Red with a beautiful underhand shot into the upper corner. Three more Cornell scores followed and the sense of urgency seemed to now rest on Dartmouth's shoulders. Dartmouth refused to panic and Cornell's fourth goal of the game was immediately followed up by a fast break off the face off where Brandon Wright of Dartmouth made a nice shot on the run to get by Justin Cynar cutting the lead to 4-3. Both teams netted one more before halftime to keep the game within one.
Going into the third, attackman Sean Greenhalgh beat Dartmouth goalie Mike Gault for the second time. He would go on to have a huge second half to score three of Cornell's next six goals. Later in the quarter Dartmouth answered back again with a goal from sophomore middie Russell Radebaugh. At this point it looked as if we had a game that was going to go down to the wire, but Cornell quickly put an end to this notion. Led by Greenhalgh, Cornell put together another streak of four unanswered goals as the game was sent into the fourth quarter. Trailing 10-5, Dartmouth had to put something together quickly, but Cornell began the slow down routine and Dartmouth's defense couldn't get enough pressure to create turnovers and any chance they did get was stopped by Cornell. They finally netted one late in the fourth, but Cornell added two more scores of their own to put the game out of reach and it ended Cornell 12 Dartmouth 6.
Both teams played well considering the weather, but Dartmouth made too many mental errors. Three times Cornell scored off intercepted clearing passes from either Dartmouth's goalie or defensemen. A team like Dartmouth just can't make these kind of errors and expect to come out on top against a team like Cornell. Dartmouth faces off against Yale at home next week and Cornell travels to Princeton which will be a much anticipated contest. Princeton who already has one Ivy League loss needs the win to make sure they get a spot in the tournament.
