The Saint Leo men's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-6 victory in the Green and Gold's home opener against Walsh. Before the opening faceoff, the Lions and Cavailers honored Blake Crownover, a Saint Leo men's lacrosse freshman who passed away in January.
The Saint Leo offense was led by Philip Buque who locked in five goals off six shots during a six-point game. Tyler Eames and Evan Wray each handed in four points. Eames tallied a hat-trick and an assist while Wray scored a pair and assisted in two. The Lions had 18 different sticks contribute points.
Jordan Williams, Ethan Ticehurst, Jack Spera, Tyler Stowell, and Kyle Croteau shared the faceoff responsibility. As a team, the Green and Gold went 10-for-29 at the face.
In goal, Ian Areford registered eight stops while facing a total of 23 shots.
Records:
Saint Leo 3-2
Walsh 1-3
The Lions pieced together four scoring runs to top the Cavs. Walsh netted the opening goal, which was answered by a five-goal run by the Lions to take the game into the second quarter. Walsh slipped in its second goal in the 12th minute of the second quarter, 5-2. Five different goal scorers allowed Saint Leo to pull away with six more goals for a halftime score of 11-2.
Walsh started and ended the third quarter scoring, surrounding yet another six-goal run by the Lions; 17-4. Walsh repeated its habit of opening and closing a quarter by finding the back of the net to start the fourth. This time, Saint Leo added three more in between the Cavs' attack, for a 20-6 final.
