PHILADELPHIA - The ninth-ranked University of Pennsylvania women's lacrosse team held a two-goal advantage at halftime, but couldn't fend off an energetic attack from No. 24 Dartmouth in the second half, falling to the Big Green 15-11 on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Quakers to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play while Penn currently sits as one of four teams with just one loss atop the Ivy League. PENN NEWS AND NOTES *Penn featured seven different goal scorers, including four with two goals. Junior Gabby Rosenzweig tallied the 100th goal of her career, now owning 101 after two goals on the afternoon. Her four points on the day matched Erin Barry for the team lead. *With the Big Green entering the game as one of the nation's top draw control squads, Penn competed admirably in the circle, with each team finishing with 14 DCs. Erin Barry led the way with five for the Quakers. *Abby Bosco featured a career day collecting the ball for the Quakers, nabbing eight ground balls, the most for any player from Penn since Emma Spiro tallied eight against Brown in 2008. The sophomore also led the team with three caused turnovers. *Mikaila Cheeseman notched 10 saves on the day. *Elyse Decker scored two goals on the day, a season-high, and broke a three-game scoreless drought. *Penn's shot accuracy hurt the Quakers on Saturday, as the Red and Blue went just 1-for-8 on free position shot opportunities. Conversely, Dartmouth took advantage to the tune of a 4-for-5 mark. HOW IT HAPPENED It was a defensive struggle to start the contest, as Penn struggled with turnovers in each of its first two possessions, but the Quakers got three saves from Cheeseman to start the game, holding off the Big Green. The home team would strike first, with just over eight minutes gone by, as Taylyn Stadler sent one home off the feed from Rosenzweig to put Penn up 1-0. The Quakers would double their advantage to 2-0 following another save from Cheeseman and Dartmouth turnover, as Laura Crawford scored for Penn, but the Big Green would even things up at 2-2 following two-straight scores within 45 seconds of each other. The teams traded goals each way to make it 3-3 before the Quakers put the clamps down on defense, holding the Big Green scoreless for nearly 10 minutes, all the while netting goals from Barry, Michaela McMahon and Rosenzweig, to take a 6-3 advantage late in the half. Despite Penn's scoring run, turnovers inhibited the Quakers from drawing out the lead even larger, and Dartmouth got one goal back late in the half to make it 6-4 at the break. Penn continued to look in control to start the second period, earning the half's first goal on a score from Stadler following a feed by Barry, making it 7-4. The Quakers had several chances to make it 8-4, but misfired on numerous shots and again were bit by the turnover bug, allowing the Big Green to seize momentum, which they did. Three goals within three minutes brought Dartmouth back even at 7-7, with Penn only possessing the ball once in that span, and the Big Green earned their first lead of the day with 18:38 to play on a free position opportunity following another Penn turnover. The Quakers tried to right the ship quickly, leveling the game at 8-all just over 30 seconds later on a goal from Rosenzweig, but four-straight draw controls from Dartmouth gave the Big Green the ball time after time, and they would not be denied, scoring four straight to take a 12-8 advantage. In all, Dartmouth went on an 8-1 run in just over an eight minute span in the second half. The teams traded goals, as Penn continued to stare down a four-goal deficit with over 10 minutes to play, but another turnover followed by a yellow card on Bosco gave Dartmouth a man-up opportunity, leading to a 14-9 lead with under eight minutes remaining. Two straight from Decker and Belodeau gave the Quakers life late, and a caused turnover from McMahon even gave Penn the ball back only down three with 2:30 left, but another costly turnover would seal the deal, as the Big Green tacked on one more to close the game, 15-11. WHAT'S NEXT? The Quakers will host another ranked opponent for their final regular season game at Franklin Field this year, welcoming in Princeton on Wednesday, April 17 at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
