An incredible 15 first-half goals were scored by American University lacrosse in an 18-3 rout of Delaware State (0-3) in the Eagles' home opener at the Jacobs Complex on Wednesday afternoon. American (2-0) got a program-record seven assists from senior Casey Harkins, who also scored twice for a career-high nine points. HOW IT HAPPENED Junior Emma Vinall completed a hat trick in the first 10 minutes, and she went on to tie her career high of six goals while also tallying one assist. The Eagles shut out the Hornets in the first half, holding them without a single shot on offense while recording 28 of their own, including 22 on goal. The duo of Vinall and Harkins combined for four goals in the win, including two of the first five. Harkins, who scored a career-high six goals in the Eagles' season-opening win, stuck primarily to passing on her way breaking the previous program record of six assists in a game. AU's lead was 10-0 with 12 minutes left in the half. Five different players scored in the final eight minutes of the period to give the Eagles a 15-0 halftime lead. Vinall came up with nine draw controls to lead all players, helping AU finish with a 17-5 advantage on the draw. After both teams switched goalkeepers at halftime, the Hornets put two goals on the board early in the second, but AU allowed them just one more the rest of the way. Sophomore Hali Sibilia also notched a hat trick, finishing with a career-high three goals. Senior Izabella Jade added one assist to a pair of goals and junior Kendall Goldblum also scored twice. Sophomore Sophie Ossip notched her first career goal, while sophomore Haley Harkins scored her second career goal and senior Erica Skowron also scored for AU. UP NEXT The Eagles will play their next two games on the road, starting with a 1 p.m. contest at Longwood on Saturday, Feb. 22.
