Sophomore attacker Charlotte North broke the program single game points record to lead the 24th-ranked Blue Devils past Presbyterian, 20-0, Wednesday in midweek action at Koskinen Stadium. Duke improved to 2-0 to start the year behind North’s five goals and career-high six assists and scoring contributions from 10 other players. Defensively, the Blue Devils kept a clean sheet for the third time in program history, holding their opponent scoreless for the first time since defeating the Blue Hose by a 23-0 margin in 2013. “The most impressive part of [Charlotte’s] day was the fact that she had so many assists because working on that part of the game and developing that this year has been a big focus for her,” said head coach Kerstin Kimel. “To have the vision to see the openings and for people to finish on the other end was really great. We know Charlotte can score, but really, really pleased with how well she saw the field today.” After kicking off the season with a strong offensive outing in Saturday’s season opener, the Duke attack went right back to work Wednesday, notching four goals inside the opening five minutes. Senior attacker Olivia Jenner won the game’s first five draw controls, helping pace the Blue Devils to a 17-4 advantage in the category on the day. Duke’s defensive personnel came up big between the 30s, limiting Presbyterian to just 2-for-10 on clearing attempts in the first half. The performance fueled the Blue Devils’ scoring run, with North securing her second hat trick in as many games midway through the opening period and breaking the single game points record on her goal at the 2:11 mark. The squad also received multiple tallies from junior attacker Catherine Cordrey and freshmen midfielders Maddie Jenner and Olivia Rubin to take a 16-0 lead into the locker room at the intermission. “It’s a testament to my teammates,” North said of her performance. “Those assists don’t come without my teammates cutting hard and finishing on the eight-meter. I think we did a good job today of working the defense, shifting them, finding the open girls and then finishing our shots.” Starting goalkeeper Gabbe Cadoux gave way to Jamie Lockwood to start the second half, with Cadoux recording one save and Lockwood two. Sophomore Chase Henriquez also saw time between the pipes in the victory. Freshman midfielder Veronica Hineman registered her first goal in a Blue Devil uniform in the second half, and second-half tallies from sophomore Madison Dunk and senior Ella Bonafede rounded out a balanced scoring performance. Senior defenders Michelle Staggers and Charlotte Tucci combined for four of the team's 10 caused turnovers. Duke held the upper hand in ground balls, 28-11, behind four each from junior defender Callie Humphrey and Olivia Jenner, and held the Blue Hose to just three shots. “We felt like we could have been tighter against Villanova in transition and so that was a big focal point for us today,” Kimel said. “Our guys did a good job of not fouling, but putting pressure on their kids carrying the ball up the field. A lot of the turnovers that we created were between the 30s and our defenders were able to recover the ground balls. One more thing we checked off our list coming off the last game that we wanted to make sure was a focus today.” The Blue Devils outshot Presbyterian, 38-3, though Blue Hose goalkeepers Kayla Koch and Heidi Shafer totaled 15 saves against the 38 shots. Up next, Duke embarks on its first road trip of the season this weekend, traveling to No. 7 Northwestern Sunday for a 1 p.m. ET contest in Evanston, Ill.
