Lexington, Ky. – Behind a blistering fourth quarter rally, the Transylvania men's lacrosse team earned an inspiring and thrilling 12-9 victory over the Birmingham-Southern College Panthers on Friday night at Pat Deacon Stadium. After conceding a three-goal lead earlier in the second half, the Pioneers erased a 9-8 deficit with 12 minutes to go in the match, scoring the last four unanswered goals of the night to vault to 4-1 overall on the season. Birmingham-Southern suffered its second loss of the season to drop to 4-2 overall. Kayd Aquino stirred the fourth-quarter run with the tying goal to notch up the score at 9-9 with 12 minutes left on the clock as part of a hat-trick performance for the senior. Seiver Utsey added two key third-quarter goals in the win while Trenton Sneed engineered the Transy offense with two assists and the final goal of the night on a signature highlight-reel backhand score. Friday's win was the first in program history for the Pioneers over Birmingham-Southern, who last squared off with Transy in the 2016 season. Transy struck first to open the night with a 3-0 lead after one quarter with goals by Bryce Lowe, Will Warner, and Dalton Hubbs. The Panthers found their footing with a four-goal second quarter but Tristan Ach and Aquino each registered goals to keep the Pioneers ahead at halftime with a 6-4 advantage. After half of the third quarter expired, Utsey gave the Pioneers their first goal of the second half to strengthen the lead to 7-4, but the Panthers sharpened with four straight scores over a four-minute stretch to clinch an 8-7 lead. Utsey rose to the occasion again with his second goal of the quarter to send the teams to the final quarter tied at 8-all. The Panthers retook momentum with a man-up goal less than 60 seconds into the final quarter but Aquino scored his second goal of the evening to tie up the game quickly again at 9-9. As the battle for possession heated up, Andrew Hamill scored his 11th goal of the season to give the Pioneers the lead for good at 10-9 with eight and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Using a sharp series of fakes, Aquino rifled the ball into the net from 10 feet away to give the Pioneers a commanding two-goal advantage with four and a half minutes to go. Having guided the offense for much of the evening, Sneed tacked on a high-fashion goal with three minutes left to seal the victory for Transylvania. Michael Webb provided seven pivotal saves to pick up the win in goal for the Pioneers and sharpen his record to 4-1 this season. The Pioneers were 17 for 24 on clears while holding the Panthers to a 15 for 25 clearance rate. Peyton Bray led the Pioneers with six ground balls. The Pioneers have scored 12 or more goals in each of their four wins this season. The Pioneers will aspire to grow their winning streak to four matches on Sunday when they host Piedmont College at Pat Deacon Stadium at 11:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
